Pascal Dozie, a renowned Nigerian entrepreneur and business leader has died. He was 86.
According to sources close to the deceased, Dozie died after a battle with old age-related illness.
Dozie, was a man of many parts, best known for founding Diamond Bank and serving as chairman of Pan-Atlantic University.
He was born on April 9, 1939, in Egbu, Owerri, Imo State, Nigeria. Dozie’s educational background includes a degree in Economics from the London School of Economics and a master’s in Administrative Science from City University in London.
Dozie also founded theAfrican Development Consulting Group, which worked with notable clients like Nestle and Pfizer. He served as MTN Group chairman but later resigned and was succeeded by Ernest Ndukwe.
Dozie received the prestigious National Award of the Order of the Niger (OON) for his contributions to Nigeria’s banking industry.
Dozie is survived by his wife Chinyere Dozie, and five children among other relatives.

The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Labour Party (LP) has passed a vote of confidence on its National Working Committee (NWC).
The LP’s NWC is led by the party’s disputed National Chairperson, Julius Abure.
The party made the resolution at its NEC meeting held in Abuja on Monday.
The National Secretary, Ibrahim Umar-Farouk, read out a communique released at the end of the meeting.
Mr Umar-Farouk said the NEC expressed satisfaction with the Supreme Court decision which, it argued, had returned the power, glory and supremacy of political parties.
“The court asserted the supremacy of the party over its internal affairs and that leadership of a political party is not for any court to decide, as it is a no-go area for the court, and so the court did not sack the NWC leadership.
“Accordingly, NEC in session reaffirmed the Nnewi National Convention held on the 27th of March 2024 that produced the current National Working Committee (NWC) members, under the chairmanship of Barrister Julius Abure,” he said.
Anti-party activities
In the communique, the NEC accused Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, of committing various anti-party activities.
Giving instances of the alleged anti-party activities, Mr Umar-Farouk said Mr Otti had called for “an unauthorised stakeholders’ meeting and usurping the powers of NEC.”
Mr Otti was elected governor of Abia State under the LP platform in 2023.
The party also accused the governor of backing another political party in the last local government election in Abia State.
“The governor has also intensified his effort to factionalise the party leadership by calling an illegal NEC scheduled to hold on Wednesday.
“His anti-party activities are unbecoming of a highly respected personality and this is no longer acceptable,” the communique read.
Otti, Peter Obi, others may be sanctioned
The LP NEC said that it would not hesitate to discipline Mr Otti for the alleged offence, in line with Article 19 of the party’s constitution.
It also threatened to discipline any other member who violated the party’s constitution, regardless of how big or powerful such individuals might be.
The party vowed to sanction its 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, if he further engages in any anti-party activity.
“NEC-in-session, in exercise of its duties, hereby cautions the former presidential candidate of our great party not to participate in any action capable of undermining the peace unity and integrity of the party, as the NEC will not hesitate to issue stiffer penalty if found culpable,” it said.
The NEC equally condemned the activities of the party’s House of Representatives caucus leader, Victor Ogene.
It said, as a result, Mr Ogene has now been replaced with another House of Representatives member, Ben Etanabene.
While Mr Ogene represents Anambra’s Ogbaru Federal Constituency in the lower chamber, Mr Etanabene represents Delta’s Okpe-Sapele – Uvwie Federal Constituency.
Anambra 2025: We’ll resolve our challenges
Mr Abure, at the meeting, said the LP would resolve its challenges ahead of the forth November governorship election in Anambra State and the 2027 general election.
The disputed national chairperson, however, said that the party would only field candidates who would be ready to promote its programmes.
He also said that the party was not opposed to coalition with other parties that would promote good governance.
“What the party is against is subversive activities that promote divisions in the party,” he said.
The meeting was attended by members of NWC, national officers of the party, state chairpersons and secretaries, other party leaders and co-opted NEC members.
Background
The Supreme Court, on Friday, set aside the judgement of the Court of Appeal in Abuja, which recognised Mr Abure as the national chairperson of the LP.
A five-member panel of the Supreme Court unanimously held that the Court of Appeal lacked jurisdiction to have affirmed Mr Abure as chairman of the LP since the substance of the case was about the party’s leadership.
But the National Publicity Secretary of the Labour Party (LP), Obiora Ifoh, later argued that Mr Abure remains the party’s national chairperson.
Mr Ifoh claimed that the Supreme Court’s position is that the matter is purely an internal affair of the party, insisting that the court did not set aside the Court of Appeal judgement of 13 November 2024, which affirmed Mr Abure as the national chairperson of the party.
Meanwhile, the LP has been battling an intense leadership crisis for a while now which has split the party into two factions.
Messrs Otti and Obi, belong to the same faction of the LP.
In September 2024, the faction appointed Nenadi Usman, a former Nigerian Minister, to manage the party’s affairs by heading its caretaker committee.
But, about a month after Mrs Usman’s appointment, a federal court recognised Mr Abure as the authentic national chairperson of the LP.
Mr Abure dismissed the convention that produced Mrs Usman and threatened to suspend Mr Otti and others from the party.
There was a mild drama in October when Mr Otti allied with an opposition party, the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP), ahead of the conduct of local government elections in the state, which were held on 2 November 2024.
The ZLP later won chairmanship seats in 15 of the 17 local government areas of Abia State despite the state being governed by Mr Otti, a member of the LP.
The LP won nine of the chairmanship seats, and the Young Progressives Party won the remaining two.
Instructively, ZLP enjoyed the support of Mr Otti. The governor had asked his aides and allies to contest the election under the ZLP platform, not the LP.

A female driver of a Toyota Salon car sustained varying degrees of injuries after her vehicle fell off the Otedola Bridge outward the Lagos-Ibadan expressway in Lagos State on Monday morning.
It was gathered that the car with the registration number IKJ 126 BH had lost control while hitting another car in the process before it fell off the bridge and landed not far off a ditch under the bridge.
According to viral videos on social media, as at 9:02am emergency responders and security personnel were at the scene, working to determine the driver’s identity and the circumstances leading to the accident.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed the incident in a statement posted on its X (formerly Twitter) handle, noting that emergency responders were on the ground to manage the situation and ensure the free flow of traffic in the area.
The agency noted that the driver had been rescued and taken to the nearby hospital.
According to the statement, “Report of an accident of a car that fell from Otedola Bridge. The driver has been rescued and taken to the nearby hospital.
“There is backlog from Otedola Bridge to Berger inward Secretariat, but our officers are on scene managing the situation effectively.”
“Other officers are also on ground doing the needful,” LASTMA added.

Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State has appointed the Emir of Fufore, Muhammadu Ribadu, as the Amirul-Hajj and leader of the government delegation for the 2025 Hajj trip to Saudi Arabia.
A press statement to this effect said the appointment is based on Ribadu’s hard work, experience, and commitment to religious matters.
The statement, signed by the Chief Press Secretary to Fintiri, Mr Humwashi Wonosikou, named five other members of the delegation.
The members include Muhammad Buba Jidjiwa, Ahmed Shehu, Alhaji Ibrahim Abba, and Alhaji Abubakar Murtala
The secretary of the delegation is Alhaji Mohammed Dabo.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), on Monday, announced that it has uncovered at least 585 A/Level forged certificates in 2025 alone.
This startling revelation was made by the Registrar, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, during a virtual meeting with staff of the Board held on 2nd April 2025 in preparation for the 2025 Mock-UTME and UTME.
Prof Oloyede condemned the worrisome prevalence of fake A/L certificates, stating that it was to curb the menace that the Nigeria Integrated Post-Secondary Education Data System (NIPED) was established.
NIPED is a platform for managing and collecting data related to post-secondary education in Nigeria.
According to the Jambulletin, the Registrar noted that more worrisome and heart-rending was the upload of 13 out of these forged JMB certificates by the Professional Registration
Centres (PRCs) which are being
investigated.
He stated that out of the 13 cases being investigated by the police, four culprits have been apprehended and are currently assisting the police and relevant authorities towards apprehending the ringleaders of these examination cartels.
He, however, added that the investigation revealed that there were internal collaborators in the institutions aiding cases and abetting this gross misconduct.
The Registrar also disclosed that there were reports from some CBT Centres on extortion of candidates for services expected to be free, adding that this mind-boggling revelation were not too good for the system.
He, therefore, enjoined staff to be
committed to their duties and shunned those acts that could undermine the integrity of the Board.

To ensure that substandard and fake medicines are denied entry into Nigeria using National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC)-appointed Pre-Shipment agents, the agency has appointed a new global testing and inspection agency, Cotecna Inspection Services (CIS), as part of efforts to bolster its Clean Report of Inspection and Analysis (CRIA) Scheme.
The Director General of NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, disclosed this during a hybrid technical meeting on mitigating substandard and counterfeit products held in Lagos. She explained that the appointment of Cotecna was in addition to existing CRIA agents operating in India and China and was aimed at ensuring that only safe, high-quality products are shipped to Nigeria.
Adeyeye said the move follows the agency’s widely praised seizure, evacuation, and destruction of over ₦1 trillion worth of substandard, expired, and banned medicines from open drug markets in Idumota, Onitsha, and Aba.
She noted that NAFDAC is strengthening the CRIA scheme to curb the influx of falsified medicines, which she described as a growing international criminal activity with serious consequences for public health and the economy.
According to the DG, the CRIA Scheme plays a key role in screening regulated products before they are exported to Nigeria. She stated that CRIA agents are responsible for physical inspection, product-specific testing, and verifying regulatory documents to ensure compliance with NAFDAC’s standards. She added that designated laboratories in both China and India are used to test randomly sampled products.

The ‘take-it-back’ movement has insisted on staging a nationwide protest today against the emergency rule in Rivers State as well as what it called human rights abuse and misuse of Cybercrime Act.
This is even as the Nigeria Police Force has warned the organisers to shelve their planned nationwide protest, describing the timing of the demonstration as ill-conceived and mischievous.
The Force noted that April 7, 2025 has been set aside by the Federal Government for maiden edition of National Police Day.
The take-it-back movement said it called for a nationwide demonstration to address what it called the “authoritarianism of President Bola Tinubu administration, abuse of human rights and the misuse of the Cybercrime Act.”
It would be recalled that from August 1 to 10, 2024, many protesters, mostly youths, trooped to major cities across the nation to demand immediate action from the federal government on the cost of living crisis which was believed to have been caused by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration’s twin policies of the petrol subsidy removal and the currency floating.
The protest, tagged ‘#EndBadGovernanceInNigeriaNow’, saw some youths in parts of the country waving the Russian flags, though many of them were later arrested.
In his reaction to the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeriaNow protest, President Tinubu, in his broadcast on August 4, had said: “My dear Nigerians, especially our youth, I have heard you loud and clear. I understand the pain and frustration that drive these protests, and I want to assure you that our government is committed to listening and addressing the concerns of our citizens. But we must not let violence and destruction tear our nation apart.”

‘Why we’re protesting today’
Addressing journalists at the weekend, the national coordinator of the take-it-back movement, Juwon Sanyaolu, said it was a “nationwide protest against bad governance and free speech suppression”.
He listed the demands of the movement as including the repeal of the Cybercrime Act and the end of the emergency rule in Rivers State, which he alleged was a form of military dictatorship, among others.
Sanyaolu said the protesters in Lagos had been urged to converge on Ikeja, under bridge.
He said those in Oyo State were to converge on the Iwo Road in Ibadan; while the protest was to take off at Isaac Boro Park in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
The activist said: “We are going ahead with our planned protest. The protest is nationwide, and we are protesting against the oppression of President Bola Tinubu government.
“We are protesting against the pushback of this government on some of the democratic rights of the citizens and the authoritarianism of this government.
“What we are protesting to ensure is that the civic gate is kept open, to ensure that Nigerians can freely continue to organise against systemic injustice and bad governance that have been the hallmark of this regime.”
He cautioned the police and other security agencies not to provoke violence, saying the protesters would resist any attempt by security agencies to disrupt the demonstration.
“We want to caution the police and other security agencies not to provoke protesters by introducing violence into a peaceful protest. They should just do their job and ensure the safety of everyone during the protest,” he added.
Egbetokun’s continued stay in office, illegal – Sowore
The former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has alleged that the continued stay of IGP Kayode Egbetokun remained “illegal”, saying that Nigerians would not take such “scandalous” appointment.
He said: “It is the Nigeria Nigeria Police Force, under the leadership of ILLEGAL Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, that should reconsider their programme.
“No amount of such initiatives can save Egbetokun from the controversy surrounding his illegal, unjust, and scandalous appointment by Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
“Egbetokun must retire from the Police Force after completing his 35 years in service the way others have retired after completing their mandatory years in service.
“Nigeria needs a new Police Force, not one headed by a spent force IGP utilizing diversionary tactics to shift public attention from his shortcomings and scandals.
“Regardless, tomorrow’s (protest) must go across Nigeria. Nothing can stop the movement of the people! #EgbetokunMustGo #RevolutionNow”
IGP warns against protest on National Police Day
The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, yesterday cautioned the take-it-back movement against holding a nationwide protest “at a time the Force is celebrating the resilience and dedication of officers and men of the Force.”
Egbetokun, in a statement by the spokesman of the Force, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said the Force was not against the exercise of citizens’ right to peaceful assembly and association in Nigeria as enshrined in the Constitution.
The IGP, however, said the Nigeria Police Force was deeply concerned about the motive behind such protest scheduled on the same day the contributions of the Force to national security was to be celebrated.
The police chief said “such glamorous event” would bring together dignitaries from all spheres of life both internationally and within the country, including foreign Inspectors-General of Police and diplomats.
“In line with best global practices adopted by nations in celebrating the achievements of its police institution, the Nigerian Government has taken the bull by the horn by declaring every April 7 as National Police Day.
“The rationale behind staging a nationwide protest on the same day is however questionable and perceived to be a deliberate attempt and unpatriotic act that is capable of rubbishing and maligning the image of the Nigeria Police and the nation as a whole.
“The Nigeria Police Force hereby advises the organisers to shelve this planned protest as it is ill-timed and mischievous,” Adejobi, an Assistant Commissioner of Police, stated.
According to him, the Nigeria Police Force under Egbetokun, the police will adequately carry out its mandate in accordance with the law and respect for rights of citizens.
He urged the organisers of the planned protest as well as individuals who intended to join the protest to pursue dialogue by engaging the proper institution of government to press home their demands.
CSOs back organisers, ask police to protect them
Two civil society groups, the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) and the Yiaga Africa have expressed support to the planned protest.
They spoke on Sunday in separate interviews with Daily Trust.
Mallam Auwal Musa Rafsanjani, the Executive Director of CISLAC and Head of Transparency International (Nigeria), said that the Police Force needed to be re-orientated on their roles and engagement in safeguarding peaceful protests which, according to him, is guaranteed in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
“Normally, as we all know, Nigerians have the constitutional right to peaceful protests against any programme or policy that is anti-people or against their wellbeing. It is also known that the Police would always wanted to stop protests, even if they are not having any Police National Day.
“The police is constitutionally bound to protect protesters and it should not be only when such protests are pro-government that Nigerians who see the protesters being protected by the Police. So the Police should allow the protesters hold their rallies, while they also hold their National Day and the protesters should be protected,” Rafsanjani said.
Also, the Executive Director of Yiaga Africa, Mr Samson Itodo, said that “one fact needs to be established that Nigeria is in a democracy, a democracy that is bound by the Constitution. And the Constitution already guarantees citizens’ right to protest and hold their governments to account.
“Protest is a form of citizens expressing their views about how their country is governed. And so, whether they choose to protest on a Christmas Day, or a New Year Day, or even a day for national celebration, it actually doesn’t matter. What matters most is the fact that citizens are exercising their franchise.
“So I don’t think that because it is a Police Day, then people should not be allowed to ventilate their views. I think it is unconstitutional to make those kinds of claims, because a police day is nothing but a day to celebrate or recognise the contributions of the Police.
“If citizens choose that they want to use that day, you know, to ventilate their views that is fine. If there’s a coincidence in the dates, it’s also fine. But what I think the Police needs to do is to use the opportunity and see that the fact that this protest is happening on the same day that you have a police day is an opportunity for the police to really demonstrate that it respect the constitutional rights by allowing the protesters to protest in a civil and peaceful manner.
“But the protesters also have a responsibility to ensure that they protest in a non-violent and civil manner to avoid any provocation from state authorities. We stand against any form of violent protest. What we advocated for is non-violent protest and so far the protesters have indicated that they would be civil in the course of their protest
“So, I think they should be allowed to exercise their constitutional rights and the Police should celebrate the Police Day by providing protection to the people who are protesting,” Itodo said.
Amnesty Int’l to FG: Uphold human rights
In its own comment on the planned nationwide protest, Amnesty International has called on authorities to uphold the rights of citizens to peaceful protest and freedom of expression.
Isa Sanusi, Director of Amnesty International Nigeria, in a statement yesterday, urged security agencies to respect the constitutional and international rights of demonstrators and cautioned against any form of repression or intimidation.
“The Nigerian authorities must ensure that security agencies respect and facilitate the right to peaceful protest, as guaranteed by both the country’s own constitution and international human rights treaties,” Sanusi stated.
“Government officials must also refrain from issuing rhetoric aimed at demonizing protesters and stifling peaceful dissent.”
In a statement signed by Michael Christian, Social Media and Communications Officer at Amnesty International Nigeria, the organisation warned against any attempts by the government to use the protests as a pretext to suppress civil liberties.
“Authorities must not use the proposed nationwide protests as a ploy to crack down on human rights, including the rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly.
“Any act capable of undermining freedom of assembly is illegal and portrays unacceptable intolerance of peaceful dissent,” he stated.
“Authorities must show a commitment to upholding the country’s constitutional and international human rights obligations by allowing people to freely exercise their rights,” the organisation said.
It also stated that the planned protests offered a crucial opportunity for the Nigerian government to demonstrate its commitment to democratic principles and human rights.

The Nigeria Police Force has withdrawn its earlier invitation extended to Alhaji Aminu Sanusi in connection with the unfortunate incident that occurred in Kano State during the Sallah celebration on March 30, 2025. The invitation was initially issued to enable Alhaji Sanusi to provide his account of the events that led to the breakdown of law and order in the state.
However, following advice from respected stakeholders and in line with the Inspector-General of Police's commitment to ensuring that policing actions are not politicized or misinterpreted, the IGP has directed that the invitation be withdrawn. Instead, operatives of the Force Intelligence Department (FID) have been mandated on the instructions of the IGP to proceed to Kano to obtain Alhaji Sanusi's statement.
Prior to the Sallah Day celebration, credible intelligence at the disposal of the Police indicated that the two (2) disputed Emirs in Kano State -Alh Ado Bayero and Alh Lamido Sanusi were planning to hold separate Durbar Festivals. The Durbar Festival is a long held tradition which involves a recognized Emir riding on horses around the city in company of his people.
To forestall possible violence, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, deployed the Coordinating DIG for the North West who also serves as the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department, DIG Abubakar Sadiq, mni , to engage in dialogue with the two disputed Emirs in kano and the Kano State Government. It was mutually agreed that no Durbar Festival would be held to preserve peace and public safety and none of the disputed emirs will ride on horse on Sallah day.
Despite this agreement, Alhaji Aminu Sanusi who had attended the Eid Prayers in his car, decided to mount a horse in a procession after Eid Prayers on Sallah Day, accompanied by local vigilantes. This triggered a confrontation by youths in the community, leading to the tragic death of one Usman Sagiru, and leaving several others injured. A situation which the Force had earlier warned against and intended to avert by the emissaries sent earlier to both Alhaji Sanusi and Alhaji Ado Bayero
The Nigeria Police Force, under the leadership of the Inspector-General of Police, remains resolute in its commitment to conducting its criminal investigation duties with the highest level of professionalism including the investigation of this incident. All individuals found culpable will at the end be brought to justice. To this effect, some arrests have been made prompting invitation to Alhaji Sanusi. The Force also wishes to reiterate that its actions are guided solely by the principles of justice, neutrality, and professionalism.

Juwon Sanyaolu, national coordinator of TIB, said the core demands of the protesters include the repeal of the cybercrime act and the end of emergency rule in Rivers state, which the group described as a “form of military dictatorship under President Bola Tinubu’s administration”.
However, a statement on Sunday by Muyiwa Adejobi, force public relations officer, questioned the motive behind the protest, describing it as “ill-timed and mischievous”.

The Federal Government is vetting potential candidates to fill diplomatic roles in its 109 missions, 76 embassies, 22 high commissions, and 11 global consulates, Sunday PUNCH reports.
Impeccable sources familiar with the developments revealed that a former Minister of Aviation under the Obasanjo administration, Mr Femi Fani-Kayode, and a former Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Femi Pedro, are among the nominees.
Sunday PUNCH also gathered that the vetting is not conducted centrally, as nominees are being asked to report to the DSS offices nearest to them.
Presidency officials confirmed to our correspondent that several candidates had been contacted to provide personal education and work history.
“They’re already doing security checks with DSS. When they have cleared security checks, we will release the list.
“Only those who have been cleared are announced. The process is ongoing. I know that we should have a list before the end of this month (April),” one official revealed, preferring to remain anonymous as he was not authorised to speak to the press.
A second source said, “The vetting is not done centrally. It is based on the location of the nominees. Nominees have been reached to provide personal history and information such as where they attended school, what appointments they have held, and the like. So, it is by location.”
Tinubu’s 4Ds and funding issues
Since September 2023, President Bola Tinubu has operated his 4Ds—Democracy, Development, Demography, and Diaspora—foreign policy without ambassadors.
That month, he concluded a sector-wide reassessment of Nigeria’s foreign policy, which saw over 83 career and non-career ambassadors recalled from their stations.
Last December, reliable sources close to the President confirmed that Tinubu spent part of his holiday reviewing the names of nominees with plans to transmit a consolidated list to the National Assembly before the end of the month.
However, updates in January revealed that the President changed his mind.
Our correspondent gathered that the process suffered delays due to the paucity of funds—to the tune of $1bn —required to pay arrears of foreign service officials, settle a backlog of overheads, replace ageing vehicles and renovate embassy buildings.
One official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said, “You see, the major issue is money. Not money to pay them [ambassadors], because how much is their salaries and benefits? The main money is CAPEX [Capital Expenditure]. By the time they put the cost together to fix the issues, it is running to almost $1bn.
“Most of those embassies, almost 90 per cent, are rundown. Either the residence is not good, the embassy does not have a functional office, or their rent has expired. The embassies that are buoyant may not be up to 10 as we speak.
“I understand that some of them don’t have serviceable vehicles. The last vehicles they bought were from 10 years ago. Some of them are broken down, and ambassadors cannot use such vehicles because they carry the image of the country. Some of them don’t even have power and running water. So, if you post ambassadors there today, you’re sending them to trouble.”
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, also attributed the delay to financial constraints.
“It is a money problem,” Tuggar said during a ministerial briefing in Abuja last May.
He argued that appointing ambassadors without the financial resources to support their travel and the effective running of missions abroad was pointless.
“We met a situation where foreign affairs was not being funded like it should be. Some loopholes are exploited by the likes of Binance. It is a money problem.
“There is no point sending out ambassadors if you do not have the funds for them to even travel to their designated countries and to run the missions effectively, one needs funding. Mr President is working on it, and it will be done in due course,” Tuggar said.
A foreign service official explained that though provisions had been made in the 2025 budget to cover some of that cost, the funds were hardly enough.
Nominees on the list
Senior Presidency and foreign service officers say although the complete list of nominees is highly classified, some prominent and controversial figures are being screened.
One official said, “They’re going to announce the appointments soon. They are being screened as we speak. The names of the nominees are highly classified for now because not every one of the names listed will eventually make it through.
“FFK [Femi Fani-Kayode] is on the list. These are some of the controversial names that have been put forward as well. Then there is Fola Adeola [founder of Guaranty Trust Bank Plc] and Femi Pedro too. They’re moving on with the process more quickly this time.”
Giving reasons for the slow process, another official explained that the vetting was necessary to avoid complications that might hurt the country’s standing on the global scene.
“The nominees are being vetted, and background checks are being conducted on them. It is usually done so that the nominees will not have any security issues and their deployment will not have a negative impact on the country,” the official said.
There was also a claim that Reno Omokri, a former aide of former President Goodluck Jonathan, was on the list.
But a credible source in the Presidency denied it.
“Reno is not on the list. But FFK is there,” the source said.
The President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr Bayo Onanuga, who earlier spoke about the delays, said nominations for ambassadorial roles must be thorough before a final list is transmitted to the National Assembly.
“Don’t forget that the ambassadorial list has two components. There are career ambassadors and political ambassadors. The foreign affairs list and the consolidated list will still go through certain processes before they are released,” he explained.
Two of the nominees, when contacted by Sunday PUNCH, declined comment.
They also did not confirm or deny the report.

Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu has emerged as the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the 2025 Anambra State election, following a tense and chaotic primary held in Awka on Saturday.
Ukachukwu clinched the party’s ticket with 1,455 votes, defeating his closest challenger, Valentine Ozigbo, who secured 67 votes.
Other contenders in the race included Engr. Johnbosco Onunkwo and Hon. Edozie Madu.
Recall Vanguard had reported that the exercise was marred by confusion and controversy, with accreditation still ongoing as late as 7 p.m., long after the scheduled 9 a.m. start time.
Delegates were reportedly being accredited at undisclosed hotels around Awka, while many party members and supporters remained at the official venue, the Dora Akunyili Women Development Centre, where the process had yet to begin as of 6:30 p.m.
Earlier in the day, violence erupted as suspected thugs allegedly hired by one of the aspirants attacked delegates, injuring several people in the presence of security operatives.
The chaos led to the withdrawal of three aspirants—Sir Paul Chukwuma, who also resigned from the APC entirely, Professor Obiora Okonkwo, and Chief Chukwuma Umeoji. Chukwuma cited the presence of “unprogressive elements” in the party, while Okonkwo expressed concern over the safety of his supporters.
In his withdrawal letter, Okonkwo stated: “This decision to withdraw from the race was a difficult but necessary one because of some developments that are inconsistent with my principles and values. The project is not worth risking the lives of my supporters.”
Despite the turbulent process, Ukachukwu, speaking after being declared the winner, vowed to deliver Anambra to the APC. “Nobody has won the governorship of Anambra without my support; it has never happened before. I have been playing godfatherism, but now I want to be the father of the father—no more godfather,” he declared.
The Anambra governorship election, scheduled for November 2025, is Nigeria’s next major off-cycle election. Governor Chukwuma Soludo, the incumbent, will contest on the platform of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

Victor Omololu Olunloyo, a former governor of Oyo state, is dead.
Olunloyo, a mathematician and engineer, died a few days before his 90th birthday, according to a statement issued by the family on Sunday.
The statement, signed by Oladapo Ogunwusi on behalf of the family, was titled ‘Victor Olunloyo goes home’.
“With a heavy heart but gratitude to the Almighty, we announce the passing into glory of Dr. Victor Omololu Olunloyo, former governor of Oyo State, mathematician and engineer and renowned technocrat, a few days before his 90th birthday,” the statement reads.
“The Balogun of Oyo and Otun Bobasewa of Ife, Dr. Olunloyo was first Rector, Ibadan polytechnic and first Rector, Kwara State Polytechnic among other notable appointments.
“His long record of service to the nation and humanity is a source of pride to his family and associates even as we come to grip with this devastating event.
“The Olunloyo family will appreciate the understanding of the press and the public as they commence efforts to give him a befitting burial.
“Even from everlasting to everlasting, He is God.”
Olunloyo was governor of Oyo in Nigeria’s second republic from October 1, 1983 to December 31, 1983 — when the military regime of Muhammadu Buhari seized the reins of power at the centre.

With a heart weighed down by sorrow, His Excellency, former Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, laments the passing of his long-serving aide and confidant, Mr. Jerry Vampa.
Mr. Vampa, a native son of Michika in Adamawa State, was not merely an employee but a steadfast companion on the arduous journey of politics. Their paths first crossed more than 35 years ago, when Jerry, having distinguished himself at the Nigeria Television Authority (NTA), Yola, in the erstwhile Gongola State, answered the call to service and joined the budding political voyage of the Waziri Adamawa.
In a solemn message conveyed through the Atiku Media Office in Abuja on Saturday, April 5, 2025, the former Vice President expressed a deep and personal grief at the loss of the man affectionately known to all as “Uncle Jerry.”
“Uncle Jerry,” Atiku reminisced, “was the embodiment of humility and warmth. To all who knew him, he was truly everyone’s uncle—a kind spirit, gentle in manner and generous in heart. He was with me from the very beginning, a living archive of my political odyssey. In him, we found not only dedication, but also serenity, loyalty, and quiet strength. My heart is broken. His absence will be deeply felt.”
Among colleagues in the Atiku Media Office, Uncle Jerry was a beloved figure whose jovial nature and unwavering commitment earned him universal affection and respect.
“He shall be remembered,” the statement continued, “for his unwavering fidelity to duty, his remarkable constancy of spirit, and his profound passion for service. Uncle Jerry leaves behind a legacy etched in dedication and friendship, one that shall not fade with time.”
