President Bola Tinubu, on Thursday, paid a working visit to Anambra State during which time he commissioned some projects executed by Governor Chukwuma Soludo.
Naija News reported that Governor Soludo commended the President for appointing people from the state into federal positions.
He also urged President Tinubu to address the marginalization of the South East region in some national projects.
Speaking, the President thanked the people of Anambra for welcoming him and conferring on him Omenife 1 of Awka.
He commended Governor Soludo for embarking on developmental projects that would boost the state’s economy.
Tinubu assured that he would address the challenges of the state and the region brought to his attention. He stressed that his administration was committed to addressing economic challenges facing the country.

“Anambra Kwenu! Anambra Kwenu!! Igbo Kwezuenu!!!
“About 30 months ago, I stood at this Venue as Candidate Bola Ahmed Tinubu. In less than two years since my assumption of office as your president, I am delighted to be back on a state visit and to commission some legacy projects by your state government. I come as a friend to the great people of Anambra and the Southeast. I salute your enterprise, innovation, and unwavering commitment to progress. Anambra has long stood as a beacon of commerce, intellect, and cultural strength — a pride not only to the Southeast but to Nigeria.
“My visit today bears a bold testament to parts of my speech during my campaign here. I recall vividly telling you then, “Charles Soludo, your son…is still my friend. I salute his vision. He is a brilliant man. He has the brain. He is a thinker. He knows the way. We will work together inclusively. When I become the president, Soludo will be one of those advisors who will bring prosperity back to you”. From what I have seen and heard, it is evident that a solid foundation is being laid, and Anambra is indeed on the rise. Charles Soludo has been my friend since 2003, and I can also confirm that we are working together for a better Anambra and Nigeria.
“I have just commissioned two landmark projects—the Solution Fun City and the Government House mini-city as part of the initial steps towards your audacious vision of Anambra as African-Dubai-Taiwan-Silicon Valley (ADTS). Together with the massive infrastructural transformation and human capital development, these are bold statements of vision and what leadership can achieve in such a short time. A few years ago, Dubai was largely a desert. Today, it is a global hub because one man dared to dream. I remember when Soludo wanted to consolidate the Nigerian banks; many said it was impossible. It was done, and Nigeria became better for it. I also recall when we dared to tame the Atlantic Ocean, and many naysayers doubted it. But we made it happen. Anambra has huge potential, and with Soludo, we can all work together to fast-track the vision.
“Let me commend the Government of Anambra State for its proactive efforts in improving security. I wish to assure you that the Federal Government will continue to partner with the State and the Southeast to secure our people and their future.
“I have noted the state’s various challenges and your request for assistance and partnership. We will continue to partner with your state to deliver shared prosperity to Ndi Anambra and all Nigerians.
“As your president, I am pleased to assure you that the nation’s state is strong and getting stronger by the day under our Renewed Hope Agenda. We met near-insolvent public finance, a decades-old monster of unsustainable multiple subsidies, a chaotic and debilitating forex regime, etc. Like we tamed the Atlantic in Lagos, many of these monsters have been tackled: petroleum and forex subsidies have been tamed; macroeconomic stability has returned within predictable bounds; tax reforms are on the way, etc. These reforms are difficult, yes, but inevitable. Everyone had long recognised their imperatives. Courage and our collective action were required to confront them to lay a strong foundation for a more stable, prosperous and inclusive economy. Already, we are seeing renewed investor confidence, expanding opportunities, and targeted support for small businesses, especially in the tech and manufacturing sectors where Anambra is already excelling. Agriculture is receiving massive attention, and the results are beginning to show.
“We have renegotiated and passed a new minimum wage into law as part of our effort to cushion the effect of these reforms on the working class. I am particularly happy that the Government of Anambra State has fully implemented the new minimum wage, and I understand that you are paying above the National minimum.
“We are working to build critical infrastructure — roads, rail, and power — and ensure that every corner of Nigeria, including Anambra, feels the impact of governance that works. The Presidential Power Initiative and the ongoing digital economy drive will open more doors for the resourceful people of this State.
“We continue to plead with Nigerians for their patience and understanding. We call on all patriots and progressives to rise and continue to work hard every day for the greatness of our dear country. We have no other country but Nigeria. We must make it great as the pride of the black race.
“Before I conclude, let me thank the government and the great people of Anambra State for your warm hospitality. In particular, I feel deeply honoured by the conferment of a Chieftaincy title by all the traditional rulers of Anambra State on behalf of the State. In 2005, the traditional ruler of Awka, HRH Gibson Nwosu (Eze Uzu II), conferred on me the title of Omenife Awka. To have all the traditional rulers of Anambra confer another title on me today is not only historic but one which I will greatly treasure for the rest of my life. Thank you to the traditional rulers.

“Many of my friends are from Anambra state, and I have seen many of them today. Going forward, we are not just friends: I am now a bona fide son of the soil—one of you, your own son! Court affirms Commission’s power to investigate exploitation

Thursday, May 8, 2025: The Abuja Federal High Court today struck out the suit filed by MultiChoice Nigeria Limited seeking to restrain the FCCPC from investigating its recent price increases for DStv and GOtv services, declaring it an abuse of court process.
The court, presided over by Justice James Omotosho, ruled that MultiChoice’s suit was duplicative and improper, given the existence of a similar matter involving the same parties pending before another court.
Consequently, the Court struck out the application in its entirety.
Recall that Multichoice had defied FCCPC’s invitation in February and proceeded to hike subscription rates barely eight months after similar increase. Instead, the cable service provider filed an application to restrain the Commission from asking questions as to the rationale behind its incessant price increase.
In his ruling, Justice Omotosho went further to affirm key provisions of the FCCPA 2018 regarding price regulation and the scope of the Commission’s mandate.
The FCCPC’s legal team was led by Prof. Joseph Abugu (SAN), while Mr. J. Onigbanjo (SAN) led the MultiChoice’s team.
The Court recognized that Section 88 of the FCCPA vests the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria with the authority to regulate the prices of goods and services when necessary. It also affirmed that the President may delegate this authority to any agency, particularly the FCCPC, for enforcement.
The Court further upheld that, under Section 17 of the FCCPA, the FCCPC is empowered to investigate exploitative pricing practices and to submit its findings, data, and recommendations to the President to inform decisions on price regulation.
Additionally, the Court confirmed that once the President declares specific goods or services as subject to price regulation, the FCCPC possesses full enforcement powers to implement such regulations.
In a swift reaction, the Executive Vice Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the Commission, Mr. Tunji Bello, described the ruling as an affirmation of the rule of law and a significant step towards curbing procedural tactics aimed at obstructing lawful regulatory oversight.
“It sends a clear message that regulatory agencies will not be hindered by procedural roadblocks when exercising their lawful mandate to ensure fairness, transparency, and accountability in the marketplace,” he stated.
According to him, “Nigerian consumers can be assured that the Commission is fully committed to investigating and addressing exploitative pricing and other anti-consumer practices, in line with the provisions of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act (FCCPA) 2018.”

The Julius Abure-led faction of the Labour Party has suspended six prominent members of the party, including the party’s only elected governor, Alex Otti of Abia State.
This decision was contained in a statement issued by the faction’s National Secretary, Umar Farouk, in Abuja, on Wednesday.
He said, “Recall that last Friday, 2nd of May 2025, the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Labour Party set up a five-man Disciplinary Committee headed by the Deputy National Chairman, Dr Ayo Olorunfemi, Alhaji Umar Farouk Ibrahim, the National Secretary and three others to investigate Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti, and any other party members over allegations of anti-party activities.
“The Disciplinary Committee has concluded their assignment and has submitted their report to the party leadership. The National Executive of the party met today, May 7th, 2025, and after exhaustive deliberation in line with powers donated to it by the Party Constitution, has ratified the recommendation as submitted by the Disciplinary Committee.
“Consequent upon that, the following members of the party have been suspended from the party and all its activities, indefinitely and with immediate effect. 1. Dr Alex Otti; 2. Senator Ireti Kingibe; 3. Senator Darlington Nwokocha; 4. Hon. Victor Afam Ogene; 5. Hon. Amobi Ogah; 6. Hon. Seyi Sowunmi.”
“By this suspension, these former members of the party will no longer act for and on behalf of the party. All concerned institutions, including the Nigeria Governors Forum, the National Assembly, INEC and security agencies, among others, are to take note.
The party also clarified that Nenadi Usman was not included in the suspension list because she is not a registered member of the Labour Party, but merely a supporter of its 2023 presidential candidate.
“We are aware that she is a member of the Obidient Support group that worked and is still working for the party’s 2023 presidential candidate. We will therefore not honour her with any sanction being not a member of the party,” the statement added.
“She should also tell Nigerians how she acquired her radio station in Kaduna, all her properties all over Nigeria and abroad, and her companies in Cameroon, including her plantations. Nenadi Usman lacks the moral capacity to commence any probe or even talk about corruption,” the statement added.
Reaffirming its position on political independence, the Labour Party declared that it will not enter into any coalition or merger ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“Finally, the party has since taken a position on the issue of coalition, and we want to reiterate that the party is not interested in any overtures by any group or persons to go into any coalition or merger,” the statement added.
“Like we have earlier stated, the protagonists of the coalition, those driving the agenda, lack the capacity, character and competence to midwife such a political arrangement. These are people who have failed to manage one political party; how can they manage an amalgam of political parties and their varied interests? The Labour Party intends to prosecute the 2027 general election as a standalone party, and no further discussion will be entertained on this matter.”
The leadership of the 10th Senate has postponed the passage of President Bola Tinubu’s tax reform bills to Wednesday for proper scrutiny and debate.
The four bills, Nigerian Tax Bill, Tax Administration Bill, Revenue Tax Board Bill, and Nigerian Revenue Service Establishment Bill were forwarded by the President six months ago as part of efforts to reform the country’s fiscal policies and boost revenue generation.
The delay in the passage of the bills had raised concerns, especially after the House of Representatives approved them two weeks ago, putting pressure on the Red Chamber.
In a related development, the Senate leadership resolved to hold a two-day national security summit to brainstorm a solution to the rising wave of killings and other forms of insecurity in the country.
The decision followed a motion sponsored by Jimoh Ibrahim, senator representing Ondo south, at the resumption of plenary on Tuesday.
While on a working visit to France, bandits in a senseless campaign of violence killed innocent Nigerians in Plateau, Benue and Zamfara States, culminating in calls for President Bola Tinubu to cut short his vacation to return home to lead the fight against insecurity from the front.
Leading the debate, Ibrahim said the “high level” of global insecurity is driven by events in Russia and Ukraine and compounded by tensions between the global north and global south.
According to him, the issues have continuously worsened food insecurity and affected the attainment of the sustainable development goals.
The former Ondo governorship aspirant emphasised that the ongoing trade tariff war in America and the growing emphasis on balance of power in global affairs are gradually giving way to a new world order.
“This new order reflects in immigration policies, visa cancellations by new regimes, and countries raising funds by selling citizenship — all of which fuel economic conflict and undermine globalisation pursued over the last sixty years,” he said.
Continuing, Ibrahim said Nigeria must clarify its strategic engagement in international affairs, noting that the Senate has a role in advising the executive to maximise national interest
“The next world war may not even require the fanfare of militarism. The incredible growing economic war is gaining ground with destructive innovation in security globally
“There is a need for alternative language in military engagement as well as enhanced funding to advance the professional practices and respected tradition of the future military,” he stated.
He therefore called for an “empirical fact-finding national security summit” to help develop far-reaching solutions.
The senator representing Katsina South, Mohammed Dandutse, seconded the motion, saying the lack of intelligence sharing among security agencies was a major setback.
He said, “Nigeria is blessed, we have no other country except Nigeria. We have to face these criminals squarely. No country succeeds except with peace and security.
“The security agencies are given funding. So there is a need for the judicious spending of these resources.”
The senator representing Abia South, Enyinnaya Abaribe and the senator representing Kebbi Central, Adamu Aliero, however, disagreed with the move.
Both lawmakers argued that a security summit may not be the solution
The senator representing Benue North-West, Titus Zam and the senate minority leader, Abba Moro,, countered their view by backing the motion.
At the end, Senate President Godswill Akpabio put the motion to a voice vote, and the majority of senators voted in favour of the summit.
Akpabio, however, proposed that the summit should last for two days instead of the three days proposed by Ibrahim.
The senate subsequently resolved to set up an ad-hoc committee to organise the two-day national security summit in Abuja
The event will include delegates from all levels of government, as well as traditional institutions.
The red chamber also urged the federal government to review and rejig the country’s security policies based on outcomes from the summit.

The hardship in the country vis-à-vis the plight of Nigerian workers was at the centre of the conversation in Abuja on Friday as some members of the Obidient Movement powered by the Cyrus Group and Free Nigeria Foundation held a talk show as part of the May Day celebration.
The high points of the well-attended event at the Merit House, Maitama, Abuja were the remarks of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP frontline Chieftain Dr Segun Sowunmi, who declared that the 2023 Labour Party standard bearer, Peter Obi, remains the only authentic Presidential candidate for 2027.
According to Dr Sowunmi, “You know I am of the PDP but the future of Nigeria is in Peter Obi. He is the only authentic candidate all others are fake”
He said that Obi is restless to see Nigeria work, and he is everywhere looking for answers to our problems, unlike others who are just waiting for what they are not ready for. “I am very uncomfortable that we are busy passing the batten between the North and the South West, leaving the very critical section of the country, the Igbo, even when they have Obi, who is the future.
Dr Sowunmi supported his position with historical illustrations and the story of the circumstance that brought Obi into politics which underscores the fact that Obi is basically in politics to change the country. He charged the Obidient Movement and the Labour Party to emulate the Labour Party in Brazil and work hard to lead the change that is needed in this country.
The Acting National Chairman of the Labour Party, Senator Nenadi Usman, said that the Labour Party actually belongs to Workers wherever they are, at the construction site, in hospitals, in the security sector, etc.
She said that the Labour Party takes any issue concerning workers' welfare very seriously and gave five deals the LP has to restore the dignity of Nigerian workers including, among others, giving workers living wages, Labour rights, non-negotiable health and housing programs for workers, and enforcement of Labour laws.
She said that workers cannot be the creators of wealth and live in penury, pointing out that everything about the Labour struggle is for the welfare of the people.
Dr Nenadi said that a government can be busy clapping for itself that it has achieved a lot but once it’s not reflected in the welfare of the people, it’s no governance.
“They can lock everyone, but they cannot luck God. 'Stay the course; don’t sell your birthright for the sake of tomorrow’s children”, the LP acting boss concluded.
The famous poet, Dike Chukwumerije, also addressed the audience, charging Nigerians to brace up for the inevitable change even if it would take eighty years, but it’s desirable not necessarily for this generation but for the sake of our children and children’s children.
Also speaking at the event, the FCT Senator Ireti Kingibe berated the obedient and the youths of Nigeria for not doing enough to take and own the country.”You are too quiet in this country and we are going down in this country, the Labour Party Senator screamed to the audience.
The other highlight of the occasion was the questions and answers session as the FCT Senator took the hot seat to respond to her constituents. While the questions to her were hot, she was equal to them addressing all the issues squarely.
The coordinator of the talk show and the Director of the Free Nigeria Foundation, Dr Moses Paul, sent warning signals to all those thinking that 2027 is going to be business as usual, declaring a ‘never again’ mantra for 2027. Dr Paul, popularly known as Dr Mo., particularly sent a message to the FCT Minister Nyesom WIKE to stop intimidating Abuja residents over election because the voters know where they are and where they are going.
The iconic gospel musician Bongos Ikwue was among the elders and other Labour veterans who graced the highly successful gathering.

The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially commenced the implementation of the Dual Mandate Policy across all Federal Colleges of Education (FCOEs), following the enactment of the Federal Colleges of Education Act, 2023. This legislation, signed into law by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, empowers FCOEs to concurrently award the Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) and Bachelor's Degrees in Education—marking a significant milestone in Nigeria’s teacher education reform.
Announcing the policy rollout in Abuja, the Education Minister described the implementation as a bold and progressive step. The Dual Mandate Policy represents not just a reform but a revolution in teacher preparation—enabling FCOEs to offer both NCE and Bachelor’s degrees. This initiative empowers institutions, broadens access, and enhances the quality of classroom instruction across Nigeria.
According to the Act, all FCOEs that meet the National Universities Commission (NUC) standards are now eligible to operate under the Dual Mandate. This inclusive policy ensures that institutions, regardless of their establishment date, can participate once the stipulated requirements are met.
The Honourable Minister emphasized the policy’s impact, noting that offering degrees within FCOEs equips educators with higher competencies to meet the evolving demands of the education sector. It also expands access to higher education by providing an alternative route to earn Education degrees outside the traditional university system.
The Dual Mandate addresses multiple challenges simultaneously, including curbing declining enrolment, preserving institutional relevance, and eliminating the need for university affiliations in the issuance of degrees.
Furthermore, the policy grants greater autonomy to FCOEs in curriculum development and implementation, enabling them to respond more swiftly to emerging trends and needs in the teaching profession.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment to revitalizing education, the Honourable Minister stated: “No nation can rise above the quality of its teachers. This policy strengthens the foundation of our education system—ensuring that every teacher is trained, qualified, and prepared.”
The inclusion of eligible FCOEs in the Dual Mandate Programme marks a vital step toward advancing Nigeria’s educational development.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration's commitment to reclaiming ungoverned areas—particularly forests—in the North West and across Nigeria, deploying advanced surveillance and technology to combat kidnapping, banditry, and terrorism.
He made the promise when he addressed the Katsina elders and leaders at a state dinner held at the Government House on Friday night.
"On the issue of security raised by former governor Aminu Bello Masari again this evening, yes, I agree that security is a challenge for the country. I addressed the men and women of the armed forces earlier today and assured them that we will do everything to fight terrorism and banditry.
"We will invest more in technology and take over the forests. Security is a national issue, not just at the local or regional levels. If we genuinely need investment in Nigeria, we must address security.
"Investment is cowardly, and it will not go where there is banditry and terrorism. We will solve the problem together with the states and local councils," he said.
President Tinubu highlighted encouraging signs of Nigeria's economic recovery, attributing recent positive growth indicators to bold policy decisions.
The President said the federal government will consider upgrading the airport in Katsina State to create jobs and expand the economy.
President Tinubu also assured that victims of terrorism will receive support to pick up their lives.
The President thanked Aminu Bello Masari for his role in ensuring that he got the endorsement of the North West and emerged as the APC presidential candidate.
The President also thanked the governors who honoured the invitation of the Katsina State Governor Radda for the commissioning of projects and his daughter's wedding.
The governors were those of Kaduna, Jigawa, Borno, Benue, Yobe, Sokoto, and Kwara States.
President Tinubu acknowledged the leadership roles of Katsina indigenes in the country and described President Muhammadu Buhari as a man of integrity who contributed significantly to Nigeria's development.
"I wish him well," he said.
In his remarks, Governor Dikko Radda said the state had established a security outfit that gathers and supplies intelligence.
He said the proposed airport expansion, including the cargo terminal, customer terminal, and fire truck, would create 2,700 direct jobs and cost N54 billion.
Former Governor Masari thanked the President for appointing two ministers from the state to the Federal Executive Council.
Masari also thanked the President for appointing Kaduna indigenes as special advisers, chairmen of boards and heads of regulatory agencies such as the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).
On why he supported the President's ambition to contest the 2023 elections, he said:
"You have the political will and courage to face the challenges of this country. You know the problem with humans: There will be resistance when new changes and a new social order are coming. And if you are not strong enough and determined, you will succumb, and the problem continues.
"But leadership is not about when it is all well. The hard way is the best; you know leaders during hard times. I know and believe you can do it; you have the courage."
Masari said the insecurity in the North West must be tackled holistically from the bottom up.

Rotary International has named Mr. Ehi Braimah, Publisher/Editor-in-Chief of Naija Times and Lagos Post, among five new Assistant Rotary Public Image Coordinators (ARPIC) for the 2025-2026 Rotary year in Africa's Region 27.
This region comprises nine Rotary districts across Anglophone West Africa and Egypt.
The announcement came via an official communication by Tamunoibim Semenitari, Rotary Public Image Coordinator (2023-2026), congratulating the incoming ARPICs and urging them to attend the upcoming Regional Team Learning Seminar (RTLS) scheduled for May 7–11, 2025, in Accra, Ghana.
Africa Zone 22, where Region 27 is situated, is one of Rotary International’s 34 global zones, and it is divided into three regions: 26, 27, and 28.
Other appointees joining Braimah include Rtn. Bassey Ekpenyong Bassey from Rotary Club of Uyo Urban, Rtn. Olubisi Abosede Yomi-Layinka from Rotary Club of Ibadan Jericho Metro, Rtn. Kwesi Nyan Kittoe from Rotary Club of Winneba, Ghana and Rtn. Marwan Montasser from Rotary Club of Alexandria New Era, Egypt.
Braimah brings decades of strategic communications experience to the role.
A former President of Rotary Club of Lagos (2018–2019) and current Assistant Governor in District 9112, he has held several public image-related roles, including Chair of the District Public Image Committee (2024–2025).

North-West Commission opens 2025/2026 foreign scholarships for undergraduate, Master’s, PhD students

The North-West Development Commission (NWDC) has officially announced the opening of applications for its 2025/2026 Undergraduate and Postgraduate Foreign Scholarship Scheme.
The scholarship is targeted at exceptional students from Nigeria’s North-West geopolitical zone.
This was disclosed in a notice issued by the Commission, which highlighted that the programme is aimed at promoting academic excellence and human capital development across the region.
The Commission noted that the initiative is designed to empower individuals from the region to access world-class education opportunities.
“This initiative seeks to foster academic excellence and empower exceptional individuals from the North-West region to pursue undergraduate and postgraduate studies at reputable foreign universities,” they stated.
“The North-West Development Commission (NWDC), as established by the NWDC Act, 2024, signed into law by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, is committed to driving development, growth, and infrastructure enhancement in the North-West region.”
Eligible courses and levels of study
The scholarship is open to applicants intending to pursue studies at the undergraduate, Master’s, or PhD levels. Approved fields of study include:
- Engineering
- Medical Sciences
- ICT and Education
Who can apply
To qualify for the scholarship, applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria:
- Indigene status: Must be from one of the North-West states—Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Sokoto, or Zamfara.
- Undergraduate applicants: Must possess five O’Level credits, including English, Mathematics, Biology, Physics, and Chemistry.
- Master’s applicants: Must hold a minimum of Second Class Upper in their First Degree.
- PhD applicants: Must have a minimum CGPA of 4.00 in their Master’s degree.
- Age limit: 35 years for Undergraduate and Master’s applicants, 40 years for PhD candidates.

A series of explosions rocked the Giwa army barracks in Maiduguri, causing panic and palpable tension across the Borno state capital city.
In a statement, Reuben Kovangiya, acting deputy director of army public relations, said the incident was caused by excessive heat amid sweltering temperatures.
He added that collaborative efforts of the Borno state fire service and other security agencies’ fire units curtailed further damage.
Kovangiya advised the public to disregard any rumours of an attack within the Maiduguri metropolitan council and to remain calm.
“The Headquarters Joint Task Force North East Operation HADIN KAI Maiduguri, wishes to inform the general public of an incident involving the explosion of ordnance in one of our ammunition storage facilities located in Giwa Barracks,” the statement reads.
“The explosion was due to the current high temperatures in Maiduguri, which led to the explosion of some munitions.
“The situation has, however, been brought under control with the combined efforts of the Borno State Fire Service Department and other fire trucks from security agencies.
“Troops of Operation HADIN KAI have been deployed to protect the public and prevent miscreants from taking advantage of the situation.”
The police command in Borno said the incident was caused by a fire outbreak.
Nahum Daso, the police spokesperson in Borno, said a fire erupted in the ammunition facility of the barracks, leading to the detonation of some munitions and loud bangs.
Daso said a combined team of security and fire service personnel was quickly deployed to the scene.
He added that preliminary investigations suggest that the high ambient temperatures currently experienced in Maiduguri sparked the fire.
The police urged the public to remain calm and not to panic, adding that the situation is now fully under control.

Prominent Business Executive and Socialite, Aisha Achimugu, has declared “hunger strike” in the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) custody following her arrest by operatives of the commission.
A statement by the legal team of Achimugu, led by Mr Chikaosolu Ojukwu, SAN, on Tuesday in Abuja said that their client was arrested at about 5 a.m., at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the EFCC had in March declared Achimugu wanted over allegations of criminal conspiracy and money laundering.
NAN also recalls that a Federal High Court in Abuja, presided over by Justice I.E. Ekwo, had on Monday ordered Achimugu to appear before the EFCC on Tuesday, and to also, appear before the court on Wednesday.
Ojukwu said that their client had arrived voluntarily from London to honour the EFCC invitation before her arrest by operatives of the commission.
He said that the socialite had through her lawyer informed the Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday that she would visit the EFCC on Tuesday.
He explained that the planned visit was in connection with an ongoing investigation into an alleged case of criminal conspiracy and money laundering brought against her.
”In the light of what transpired in court on Monday, our client returned based on the undertaking before the court to honor the EFCC’s invitation, but was arrested at the airport.
”She has immediately gone on a hunger strike. She is a prisoner of conscience and our stand in the arrest is that it has run contrary to the rule of law,” he said.
NAN reports that efforts to reach out to the EFCC spokesman, Dele Oyewale on the arrest of Achimugu proved abortive as the phone rang severally without picking.
Ojukwu said that Achimugu was a well-known business magnate and the Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Felak Concept Group, a consortium comprising several companies in engineering, maritime, oil and gas, and information technology.

We have read the alarming claims of disgruntled opposition figures, some partisan human rights crusaders and emergency defenders of democracy over recent defections of key members of opposition parties into the governing All Progressives Congress.
The seismic shift caused by Akwa Ibom Governor Umo Eno's open declaration of support for President Bola Tinubu, the defection of the Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, the former vice presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the last election, Dr Ifeanyi Okowa, and the principal political actors in Delta and Rivers States certainly threw the opposition and their sympathisers into disarray.
While the opposition elements are understandably heartbroken over the failure of their fabled grand coalition to gain traction, we find it disturbing that they resorted to peddling false allegations of promoting a one-party State against President Bola Tinubu, who is working very hard to reverse decades of economic mismanagement in our country.
Contrary to the false claims in the propaganda materials in circulation across mainstream and social media, democracy is not under any threat in Nigeria. Accusations that the administration is moving towards authoritarianism are baseless and exaggerated.
We must add that no policy, official action, or directive from the Presidency seeks to "dismantle democracy" or "weaken opposition or create a one-party state."
Accusations of bribery, blackmail, and the weaponisation of state institutions only exist in the idle minds of politicians and their agents who have failed in their assigned role of opposition and are fishing for scapegoats.
The opposition cannot blame President Tinubu and the governing APC for their poor organisation, indiscipline, and gross incompetence in managing their affairs. It is certainly not part of President Tinubu's job to organise or strengthen opposition parties.
We find it curious that those who celebrated the defection of the former Governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, to the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and the formation of a regional grand coalition with the sole aim of defeating President Tinubu in the 2027 election are the same people shedding crocodile tears over Nigeria's so-called drift to a one-party state and authoritarianism.
While the latter-day defenders of democracy raised no anxious voice against the disgruntled politicians cobbling an anti-Tinubu, anti-APC coalition along dangerous regional lines, even before INEC blows the whistle for party politicking, they are quick to ascribe the political shifts in some states to "bribery, blackmail, and coercion" without any shred of evidence.
Without any equivocation, freedom of association, freedom of speech and freedom of choice are part of the cherished ideals of democracy.
When politicians and citizens cannot freely join any association or political party of their choice or cannot openly express their views, democracy is imperilled.
Those opposed to the Tinubu administration should understand that they can issue diatribes, without fear, against the government because we practice a thriving democracy.
It is hypocrisy writ large when opposition politicians and their collaborators in the 'human rights' movement desire that the party of the President should implode so they can gain electoral advantage and cry wolf when their wish does not materialise.
We want to state that democracy is not threatened or undermined simply because politicians exercise their rights to freedom of association.
Nigerians migrating to the APC and expressing support for Tinubu are doing so out of their free will, based on the belief that the reforms being executed are in the interest of Nigerians and the unborn generation.
It is a gross disservice to democracy in itself for these emergency defenders of democracy to delegitimise the political choices of some Nigerians while upholding the choices of others to form a coalition against Tinubu and APC.
Under President Tinubu, democracy is strong, and the multiparty democratic system will continue to flourish unhindered.
His administration remains resolutely committed to upholding and strengthening the democratic foundations upon which our Fourth Republic has stood since 1999
Politicians changing party affiliation is not new or peculiar to Nigeria. In more advanced democracies, there are ready examples of notable politicians, statesmen and women who changed their parties.
President Tinubu and the National Working Committee of the APC, under the leadership of Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, deserve commendation for making the ruling party viable and attractive to all Nigerians willing to participate in the democratic process.
President Tinubu is an avowed democrat and a firm believer in multiparty democracy.
His political activism and democratic credentials in galvanising and strengthening opposition platforms as a force that defeated a sitting President and the then ruling party attest to his credibility as a tested defender of multiparty democracy.
We urge all Nigerians to join hands with the administration in protecting our democracy by respecting our people's choices and giving alarmists, who draw their narratives from the pool of fiction, a wide berth.
