Former Lagos State governor, Babatunde Fashola, has revealed that during his tenure from 2007 to 2015, he required his aides and commissioners to join social clubs across the state.
This mandate, Fashola explained, was aimed at ensuring that government policies and activities were more accessible and better understood by the public.
“During our administration, I mandated my aides and commissioners to join social clubs in Lagos so they could gain insights and educate people about government policies wherever discussions were taking place,” Fashola said.
Fashola, who also served as a former minister and is a patron of the Eko Club, shared these insights during the club’s 50th-anniversary lecture last Wednesday.
The lecture was titled “The Role of Social Clubs in Social Engineering.”
The ex-governor emphasised the importance of common interest as a key pillar of social clubs and urged Eko Club to reinvigorate its focus on sporting activities. Fashola noted that sports is a significant yet underutilised source of employment, especially in an environment grappling with high youth unemployment.
“Eko Club must return to its sporting objectives and lead the revival of youth inter-club competitions. We cannot rely solely on government efforts for the success of our athletes at international sports events,” he said.
The Senior Advocate of Nigeria also called for the club to be more engaged in matters of public interest.
He added that Eko Club should expand its role beyond hosting events and be more involved in societal issues.
“It is my humble view that we have been somewhat detached from issues that affect our common interests. Eko Club is too significant and prestigious to be known merely as a venue for parties, anniversaries, and weddings, important as these may be to social engineering,” Fashola remarked.
He encouraged the club to focus on its future rather than dwelling excessively on its past, advising them to prioritize the next 50 years of development.

A former aide to ex-president, Muhammadu Buhari, Okoi Obono-Obla, on Monday, accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of manipulating the 2023 national and state assembly primary elections to benefit defectors from other political parties.
Obono-Obla, in a statement where he called for midterm elections to reform the leadership of the APC in Cross River State, claimed that only the governorship primary election was conducted fairly, with the winner emerging through a consensus.
He alleged, “All tickets for elective positions such as national and state assemblies (except the governorship ticket) were manipulated and handed over to defectors.”
He urged the party to conduct midterm congresses at the state, local government and ward levels to address the alleged imbalances, claiming deep divisions within the party’s ranks due to perceived injustices that followed the 2021 defections from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Obono-Obla also criticized the current APC leadership in Cross River State for running an exclusive and undemocratic administration.
He argued that the party’s executive committees at all levels are dominated by defectors from the PDP, and called for a more inclusive leadership.
The APC State Chairman, Barrister Alphonsus Ogar Eba, in response to the allegations, dismissed Obono-Obla’s allegations, accusing him of attempting to divide the party.
Eba said Obono-Obla’s frustration stemmed from the failure of his efforts to secure federal and state appointments for himself and his nominees.
The Lagos State Parking Authority (LASPA) has offered a six-month grace period to hospitality businesses to resolve parking shortfalls.
Adebisi Adelabu, general manager (GM) of LASPA, spoke on Monday during a meeting with representatives of the restaurant, cafe, bar and club (RCBC) association in Lagos.
The meeting aimed to address concerns regarding the Lagos state parking policy and its impact on businesses in the hospitality industry.
Adelabu expressed concern over the inadequate parking facilities in some establishments.
She said many hospitality businesses had failed to comply with building regulations that require sufficient parking for their customers.
The LASPA boss reassured attendees that the state government remains committed to the parking policy, which aims to curb indiscriminate parking and reduce traffic congestion.
The general manager also addressed concerns about overlapping jurisdictions and interference from local governments.
Adelabu said the state has formed strategic partnerships with local governments and local council development areas (LCDAs) to prevent additional disturbances over parking levies.
“Business owners are advised to consult with LASPA before allowing customer parking on roads, which can obstruct traffic,” she said.
“We acknowledging the challenges faced by businesses. There is need for the hospitality sector to communicate their specific needs so that LASPA can provide appropriate guidance and recommend nearby parking options.”
She stressed the need to balance business interests with the rights of the general public and urged businesses to comply with the policy, adding that LASPA has made provisions for flexible payment plans for compliant businesses.
Adelabu called on Lagos residents to support the state’s parking regulation efforts and participate in the regulated on-street parking scheme.
“Compliance with the policy is vital for reducing traffic congestion and improving parking efficiency,” Adelabu said.
“By paying the required parking levies and engaging with the system, you help create a more organised and accessible urban environment.”
In her remarks, Morenike George-Taylor, RCBC’s president, thanked the LASPA general manager for her proactive engagement and confirmed that many members were already in compliance with the parking regulations.
George-Taylor also affirmed the hospitality sector’s readiness to support and adapt to the new parking scheme.
A Nigerian Catholic priest was indicted in Texas, United States of America on felony sexual assault charges after several victims accused him of s3xual and financial abuse, according to court documents and investigators, The New York Times reported on September 15, 2024
Odiong was indicted on Thursday by a grand jury in McLennan County, Texas, on two counts of second-degree sexual assault and one count of first-degree sexual assault.
He was arrested in July in Ave Maria, Fla., when investigators found him in possession of child pornography while looking into sexual assault claims reported to the police, according to a Facebook post from the Waco Police Department.
He was not indicted on possession of child pornography, but could be in the future, Detective Bradley DeLange said.
The police had been investigating Father Odiong for months because they had received “credible information” alleging he committed a sexual assault in 2012, according to the police.
During the investigation, Detective DeLange said, the police found several women with similar stories of abuse as the original victim who had come forward.
Detective DeLange discovered at least eight women who claim that the priest groped, s3xually assaulted or financially abused them, including one woman who sought Father Odiong’s counsel over her marriage troubles.
Under Texas Law, it is considered s3xual assault if members of the clergy engages in sexual activity with individuals who depend on them emotionally as “spiritual advisers.”
Father Odiong served as a priest at St. Peter Catholic Student Center in Waco, Texas, and at St. Mary’s Church of the Assumption in West, Texas, from 2007 to 2012, according to the police, and he also served in Luling, La., from around 2015 to 2023.
He was brought to McLennan County Jail on Aug. 6 and is being held on a $2.5 million bond, according to jail documents.
He faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted on the second-degree sexual assault charges and could get life in prison for his first-degree felony charge, according to Christopher King, a lawyer representing several people in a separate civil case against the priest.
The Guardian reported in February on the allegations, which Father Odiong denied in April in a Facebook post that called them a “false, salacious and one-sided smear campaign.”
Archbishop Gregory Aymond, the Diocese of Austin, Texas, during the beginning of Father Odiong’s time as a priest at that diocese, and he now leads the Archdiocese of New Orleans, where Father Odiong served in recent years.
Bishop Joe S. Vásquez, the current leader of the Diocese of Austin, said in a statement in July that the diocese would fully cooperate with law enforcement.
Sarah McDonald, a spokeswoman for the Archdiocese of New Orleans, said on Sunday that Father Odiong had served there at the request of the Diocese of Uyo in Nigeria.

The First Lady of Edo State, Betsy Obaseki, has stated that President Bola Tinubu has no intentions to influence the September 21 gubernatorial election in the state.
She stated this while reacting to allegations that Tinubu has planned to influence the outcome of next Saturday’s governorship election in favour of the All Progressives Congress, (APC) using “federal might.”
Obaseki asserted that Tinubu is not in a level where he would stoop to influence an election.
She disclosed this while responding to questions during an online television interview.
“President Tinubu is smarter and wiser. He is not at their level at all. I also want to praise former President Muhammadu Buhari for his democratic stance and using federal power only to safeguard voters, not to tamper with election results,” she said.

The Church has firmly rejected accusations of fabricating testimonies and criticized the misleading nature of some viral videos.
In a statement released on Monday, the Church urged Nigerians to approach internet content with caution, warning against believing everything seen online.
The Church specifically condemned bloggers they described as “devilish,” accusing them of manipulating and taking statements out of context for sensationalism.
The backlash followed viral videos featuring testimonies from Church members, including one particularly controversial account where a member claimed to have ridden on a lion.
The Church emphasized that such testimonies are genuine expressions of faith and not fabricated stories.
The Church called on the public to disregard the disparaging comments and to approach such matters with discernment.
The Lord’s Chosen member in the testimony had said, “Something entered my back, lifted me up. It carried me like aeroplane to express.
“When it reached there, it dropped me. When it dropped me, I turned to look at what carried me and as I looked it was lion.
“So when the lion dropped me, the place was very narrow and tight, it now raised one hand up and asked me to go like this (pointing to the left). When I go, the lion said bye bye.”
In another viral video, a lady said he fought robbers and took their AK-47 rifles.
In the footage, the elderly woman revealed that she was attacked by armed robbers.
She said she “Miraculously gained control of their guns and ensured the arrest of three of the robbers.”
Similarly, a man revealed that he survived kidnapping, machete attacks, and gunshot wounds “without injury”.
However, reacting to the videos and the reactions trailing them, the Lord’s Chosen Church said the footages were doctored.
The Head, Public Relations and Media, of the church, Pastor Chidi Louis, described the videos as “a bid to discredit what God is doing.
“Nigerians should visit the Church’s platform and listen to the complete testimonies for better understanding. The woman defeated the armed men in a dream.
“Don’t believe everything you see on the internet. They just cut one part and made it look real. The woman was explaining her dream.
“The viral video is a fake one. It was doctored.
“Most of these bloggers are very wicked and devilish, they edited this testimony in a bid to ridicule the work of God.”
Also, the Lord’s Chosen Church media department, on its platform, described the clip as fake and urged the public to disregard it.

At least three people were reportedly killed by armed bandits in a recent attack in Bakinpah-Maro, a locality within the Kajuru Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
Naija News learnt that the assailants invaded a church within the area and gunned down Christian worshippers.
It was gathered that approximately 31 individuals, including a pastor, were abducted during the attack, which specifically targeted the ECWA and Catholic churches in the area.
Reports indicate that this tragic event took place on Sunday while church services were ongoing.
A former chairman of the Kajuru Local Government Area, Cafra Caino, has confirmed the distressing occurrence.
Caino told Leadership that the assailants, who arrived in significant numbers around 10 a.m., opened fire indiscriminately at the two churches.
He also mentioned that Bernard Gajera, a pastor from one of the churches, was among those taken by the perpetrators.

A week ago, a yet-to-be-ascertained number of nurses were taken hostage by bandits who stormed a Primary Health Care Center in Kaduna State recently.
Naija News learnt that the incident happened in Layin Dan Auta village, within the Kuyello Ward of the Birnin Gwari Area of the state.
The assailants were said to have initially targeted a primary school in Kuyello, located on the town’s periphery. However, when they were unable to find any students to abduct, they allegedly proceeded to the adjacent hospital, where they seized the nurses who were on duty.
A local leader, who chose to remain unnamed, verified the occurrence to Daily Trust, characterizing the situation as concerning.
“They arrived in the area and went straight to a nearby school, thinking they would find students. However, the school was empty, so they proceeded to the PHC in Kuyello and abducted the nurses on duty,” the source said.
Another youth leader from Kuyello, Baba Isah, has also verified the occurrence.
He mentioned that the two nurses were present during the assault by the bandits.
It is still uncertain whether any patients were taken, as the majority had already departed from the hospital.

Donald Trump says he will deal decisively and put an end to what calls a “migrant invasion” if he is elected the US presidential elections in November.
Trump vowed to halt the influx of migrants into the country and abrogate all president Joe Biden and Kamala Harris administration immigration policies.
Trump, who made this known in a post he shared on X on Sunday, said he would protect cities and towns in states grappling with the scourge of unchecked migration.
“As President, I will immediately end the migrant invasion of America,” the former US president wrote.
“We will stop all migrant flights, end all illegal entries, terminate the Kamala phone app for smuggling illegals (CBP One App), revoke deportation immunity, suspend refugee resettlement, and return Kamala’s illegal migrants to their home countries (also known as immigration).
“I will save our cities and towns in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and all across America.”
Trump’s stiff stance comes a day after saying he would execute large-scale deportations of migrants, beginning in Ohio and Colorado.
He said it would be the “largest deportation in the history of our country”.
“And we’re going to start with Springfield and Aurora,” he said.
In a debate with Kamala Harris, the Democratic presidential candidate, Trump claimed that migrants in Springfield were eating American pets.
Trump has frequently criticised influx of migrants and has announced border restrictions as the top of his priorities if he returns to the White House.

Troops of the Nigerian Army have recorded another success in the fight against terrorism by killing a notorious bandit kingpin, Baleri Fakai.
Reports obtained by Naija News on Monday revealed that Baleri Fakai was among thirty (30) bandits who were neutralized recently in the Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara State.
Baleri Fakai is said to be a close associate and superior to Bello Turji, another infamous bandit leader.
Multiple sources, including security analysts, have confirmed that Fakai has indeed met his waterloo days after appearing invincible in a video shared on TikTok.
Former Presidential aide, Bashir Ahmed, also shared the news of his killing on his X handle on Monday.
Ahmed wrote, “WONDERFUL: It has been confirmed that the joint security forces have eliminated the notorious bandit leader Baleri Fakai, along with 30 other terrorists, in Maru, Zamfara state. Baleri Fakai was a close ally to murderer Bello Turji, who will be joining him soon, in Sha Allah.”
Naija News reports that the latest development brings the record to about five bandit leaders eliminated in a 72 hour span.
Earlier, troops from Operation Hadarin Daji announced the killing of four notorious bandit leaders in Zamfara State.
It was gathered that the criminals, identified as Ibrahim Nagure, Lawali Dodo, Kadiri, and Jambaleri, were killed during a military operation that also neutralized Halilu Sububu, a key figure behind numerous terrorist activities in the North West.
Meanwhile, military forces apprehended another wanted terrorist kingpin, Hosseini Osman, in Plateau State.
He was captured in Ganawuri village, Riyom local government area, where he confessed to organizing several deadly attacks, including a recent assault on Ganawuri village that claimed the lives of innocent civilians.
Osman also revealed his involvement in a local kidnapping syndicate responsible for a series of abductions.
Using information obtained from Osman, troops swiftly mobilized to Kyaram village in Kanam local government area, where they successfully rescued several kidnapped victims.
In a separate operation, PRNigeria sources confirmed that troops launched a strategic ambush on fleeing terrorists from the Sambisa Forest heading towards the Mandara Mountains in Gwoza local government area.
This led to significant casualties among Boko Haram fighters and the seizure of a large cache of weapons and ammunition.

Similarly, a man revealed that he survived kidnapping, machete attacks, and gunshot wounds “without injury”.
Another man alleged that a lion rescued him from kidnappers by lifting him into the air and guiding him to safety.
“Before you know it something entered my back, lifted me and carried me from there to the express. When it reached there, it dropped me and I turned to look at what carried me, it was a Lion,” he added.
“So where the lion dropped me was very tight and narrow, he now raised his one of his hands and said I should go like this. When I left, he told me bye bye.”

A former Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Kanu Agabi, has said that politicians who rigged elections have no moral justification to call on God for help when they run into roadblocks.
Agabi stated this during an appearance on Channels Television on Sunday.
He asserted that those who nurse suspicion against elections in Nigeria have justifiable grounds to seek redress in court.
Agabi noted that the problem with Nigeria is not the 1999 constitution but those who are enforcing the laws.
“So, the problem is not with the laws but with “good people to enforce them. We need to reform ourselves as a nation,” he said.
Speaking further, the ex-justice minister said the courts are burdened with electoral cases because Nigeria’s elections come under “justifiable suspicions”.

“The judiciary is not perfect but it is the best arm of government. The problem is this: On the judges’ lists, there may be 30, or 40 cases a day. How can he cope? As long as they go on struggling with that system, they cannot cope.
“The problem of the judiciary arises from the fact that the judges are overworked.
“Take the elections for instance. Do you know how many percentages of elections are challenged? Why? Because the elections come under justifiable suspicions. Those who suspect the elections are justified but if we reach a point where the elections are not opened to the kind of criticisms and suspicions that they have been suspected, then they can free up the courts.
“Primaries are rigged at the party levels. Giving a spiritual dimension, when you have stolen the office that you are holding, do you expect God to partner with you? Can you pray over that office? Can you use it to do any good? That’s the problem.
“St Paul said I am an Apostle of Jesus Christ by the grace of God. Whatever office you hold, you must be able to say the same thing. You must be able to say, ‘I am a governor by the grace of God’, ‘I am a senator by the grace of God’. If you can’t say that, your prayer in calling upon the name of the Lord in that office is an abomination.”
