Abductors of the three members of the Deeper Life Bible Church in Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State, have reportedly demanded a N15million ransom for their release.

Recall that the church members were abducted Monday evening while returning from Bible Study at Kasemola area, in Ogbese community. 

A family source told newsmen that the abductors have opened line of communication with the family and the leadership of the Deeper Life Bible Church.

The source said: “Yes, they have contacted us and have demanded for a ransom of N5 million per victim.
“We are raising money from well wishes and church members to be able to pay the ransom.”

Meanwhile, the church leaders have organised prayer warriors to intercede for the release of the kidnapped church members.

A source in the church, who confirmed the development said: “We have reported the incident to the police and Amotekun Corps in the state.”

Contacted, the state police command spokesperson, Ayanlade Olayinka, confirmed the abduction of the three church members.

Ayanlade said that police detectives were already combing the forest to locate and secure their release.
According to him, “I can confirm to you that there is an issue of kidnapping but I cannot confirm the number of the victims for now,”

He noted that efforts were ongoing to apprehend the culprits and bring the situation under control.

French President Emmanuel Macron denied, on Monday, having a domestic dispute with his wife Brigitte after a video appeared to show her shoving his face away when they touched down for a visit to Vietnam.

He blamed disinformation campaigns for trying to put false meaning on the footage. 

The Elysee had been hoping that the visit to Vietnam would showcase France’s reach into the Indo-Pacific, but it has been shadowed by the incident which occurred as the doors of the presidential plane swung open after landing in Hanoi Sunday. 

This is the third time this month that Macron has been the subject of viral video footage at a time when France says it is being targeted by repeated disinformation attacks as Russia steps up attacks on Ukraine.

It was falsely claimed Macron took cocaine on a trip to Kyiv alongside British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

Images images also emerged purporting to show Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan dominate the French leader in a handshake.

Brigitte sticks out both her hands and gives her husband’s face a shove, according to footage shot by the Associated Press news agency.

The French president appears startled but quickly recovers and turns to wave through the open door. But with most of her body hidden by the aircraft, it is impossible to see his wife’s facial expression or body language.

“My wife and I were squabbling, we were rather joking, and I was taken by surprise,” he said.

Now it’s “become a kind of planetary catastrophe, and some are even coming up with theories,” Macron told reporters. 

‘Calm down’

Macron testily referred to the other incidents, including the images shot on a train to Kyiv where some accounts falsely claimed he shared cocaine with Merz and Starmer.

But the object Macron removed from the table when the media entered was a tissue.

Erdogan, meanwhile, was filmed holding the president’s finger at a summit.

“For three weeks… there are people who have watched videos and think I shared a bag of cocaine, that I had a fight with the Turkish president, and that now I’m having a domestic dispute with my wife,” said Macron.

“None of these are true,” he said. 

“Everyone needs to calm down,” he added.

After the incident in Hanoi, the couple proceeded down the staircase for the official welcome by Vietnamese officials, though Brigitte Macron did not take her husband’s arm when he offered it.

The video circulated rapidly online, promoted particularly by accounts that are habitually hostile to the French leader.

Macron’s office initially denied the authenticity of the images, before they were confirmed as genuine. A close associate of the president later described the incident as a couple’s harmless “squabble”.

‘Nothing more’

Referring to the past incidents, Macron said: “In these three videos I took a tissue, shook someone’s hand and just joked with my wife, as we do quite often. Nothing more.” 

“We have loads of accounts, anonymous or not, whose frustrations are going to their heads, including news commentators who said this morning that I have the diplomacy of a beaten man,” he added.

He emphasised that all three videos were “completely authentic” but the meanings attached to them were not.

Governor Umo Eno has been applauded by the state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for his bipartisan disposition to governance in Akwa Ibom state following a donation of a Prado Jeep to Obong Stephen Ntukekpo, the chairman of the main opposition party in the state.

Commending the governor for such a rare gesture, the state APC publicity secretary, Barr. Otoabasi Udo, said the party received the gift with excitement, describing the governor’s benevolence as borne out of mature politics.

The team will train at the Luis Suarez complex, a nearly 20-acre facility with a synthetic turf stadium that has a capacity for 1,400 spectators as well as a 7-a-side pitch with room for 620 fans.

Lateef Fagbemi, attorney-general of the federation (AGF) and minister of justice, says the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) recovered N277 billion and $105 million in 2024.

Fagbemi spoke in Abuja on Tuesday at a summit on asset recovery.

He noted that asset recovery is essential in the fight against corruption, economic crimes, and illicit financial flows.

The AGF said Nigeria had recorded some successes in asset recovery, both at domestic and international levels, in the past couple of years.

“In 2024 alone, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is reported to have reclaimed over N248 billion, $105 million, and 753 duplexes in its asset recovery efforts,” Fagbemi said.

“The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) is also reported to have recovered N29.685 billion in cash and $966,900 in assets.

“The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has equally intensified its efforts in seizing assets linked to drug-related crimes, ensuring that illicit proceeds do not fuel further criminal activities.

“Nigeria has successfully repatriated significant funds from abroad, reinforcing our commitment to financial accountability.

“With regard to international recovery and repatriation of assets, which is within the purview of the federal ministry of justice, it is pertinent to state that from 2017 to date, the ministry, working in collaboration with its counterparts and international partners (the US, UK, Bailiwick of Jersey, Ireland, and Switzerland), was able to facilitate the execution of various agreements.

“This led to the payment of fines, recovery and repatriation of assets in the sum of $763,734,000, and 6,472,610 pounds.

“Of these sums, a total of 102.88 million dollars and 2,062,000 pounds (Galactica assets 52.88 million dollars, Glencore fined 50 million dollars, Useni/Miner 2,062,000 pounds) was recovered from 2024 to date.”

In January 2025, the federal government and the United States signed an asset return agreement on $52.88 million recovered from the Galactica assets.

The assets were linked to Diezani Alison-Madueke, a former minister of petroleum, and her associates.

The leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) of plotting to turn Nigeria into a one-party state.

The opposition party claimed the move is driven by Tinubu’s fear of losing the 2027 elections. 

The PDP’s stance was outlined in a communiqué issued on Tuesday after the party’s national executive committee (NEC) meeting held in Abuja. 

Opposition parties, including the PDP, Labour Party (LP) and New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), have been hit by a gale of defections in recent weeks.

The development has drawn criticism from various stakeholders, who believe the APC-led government is steering Nigeria toward a one-party state.

However, the main opposition party said it stands in firm resistance to the plot by the president and the APC. 

“NEC stands in firm resistance to the sinister plot by the Tinubu-led APC to turn Nigeria into a one-party totalitarian state, as evidenced by the desperate attempts to stifle and annihilate opposition parties through open siege, threats and intimidation of opposition figures and institutions of democracy in Nigeria,” the communique reads.

“It is clear that this plot is borne out of APC’s mortal fear of inevitable defeat in 2027 due to its dismal failure in government. 

“On the part of the PDP, NEC restates our party’s belief in democracy, the rule of law and the supremacy of the will of the people as expressed through their free and unhindered democratic participation in multi-party politics and governance.”

STATE OF AFFAIRS

The PDP expressed concern over what it described as the “sorry and melancholic” state of affairs in the country under the “irredeemably exploitative, insensitive and anti-people” administration of the APC.

The party condemned the killings, banditry, kidnapping, and other violent crimes in the country, saying the federal government has failed to protect citizens.

The party asked Tinubu to reverse all policies which have brought economic hardship to Nigerians.

“NEC restates the PDP demand that President Tinubu’s administration should rescind all its anti-people policies and take practical steps to address the insecurity and economic recession in the country,” the party said.

The party also ratified the composition of the national convention committee and approved the convention, which will be held from Thursday, August 28, to Saturday, August 30.

It added that the NEC also received and ratified the composition of the committee on the zoning of national offices ahead of the national convention.

The zoning committee members are Douye Diri, governor of Bayelsa, as chairman; Dauda Lawal of Zamfara as vice-chairman; and Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau as secretary.

The national convention committee comprises Ahmadu Fintiri, governor of Adamawa, as chairman; Ademola Adeleke of Osun as vice-chairman; and Peter Mbah of Enugu as secretary.

The NEC also received the resolution of the south-east zonal executive about the issue of the national secretary and resolved to consider it at the next NEC meeting scheduled to be held on June 30.

A woman who has identified herself as the wife of a deceased Nigerian has renounced her South African citizenship following her husband’s death.

Speaking to News Central in a clip posted on Tuesday, the woman lamented the treatment of other Africans in South Africa.

“From now on I won’t be a South African; I’m ashamed to call myself a South African. I am a Nigerian; call me names; I don’t care,” she said.

“All I’m asking is that the Nigerian government stand and fight for our people.”

The bereaved woman said her two sons for the deceased are scared to attend school in the former apartheid country.

“Is it a crime to be Nigerian? Why did they have to kill my father?” she said, quoting her 13-year-old son. What kind of country is this?”

She also alleged that her husband’s suspected killer is walking free, accusing the South African government of being complacent.

She asked the Nigerian high commission in the country to intervene, vowing not to relent until justice is served.

The deceased Nigerian man was said to have been killed in Pretoria in a case of retaliatory violence.

Ola Olukoyede, chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), says bank employees are conniving with hackers to aid cyber fraud. 

Speaking in an interview on TVC on Sunday, Olukoyede said six banks have been targeted in coordinated cyber attacks by hackers.

The EFCC chairman claimed that bank employees grant access to banking portals in which hackers usually exploit from any part of the world they reside. 

Olukoyede said the anti-graft agency had recovered N9.7 billion, N6.7 billion, and N3.7 billion stolen from some banks in Nigeria.

He emphasised that based on the cases handled by EFCC, breaches in banking portals are usually facilitated by bankers who “understand the system”.

“What people do is to get a device. When they plug it into (the banking digital system) in connivance with the insiders — the bank staff”, Olukoyede said. 

“Wherever the other persons are, even if they are outside Nigeria, they will be able to control the platform of the bank. The person can now move money: in a second, they can move billions.

“What they do now is that they won’t move the money out completely. They now distribute it to the accounts of many customers. 

“They have access to those accounts. From those accounts, they will move the money to wallets or POS (terminals) and withdraw the money.

“Many banks are vulnerable. That wouldn’t have been possible without the connivance of the bank staff.”

He added that the EFCC had deliberately maintained silence on the matter to prevent panic withdrawals by customers and safeguard public confidence in the banking system.

Some political activists in Rivers State have expressed concerns over the body language of the Sole administrator, which according to them, might be an indication that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu may be extending the State of emergency in the state.

However, they are of the opinion that there is no reason whatsoever to extend the emergency rule in the state which they described as peaceful even before the President took the decision.

Activists and political watchers who spoke to DAILY POST believe that the President was even misled by some politicians in making the declaration, calling on him to end it without further delay.

DAILY POST reported that President Bola Tinubu had in a nationwide broadcast on Tuesday, March 18, 2025 declared a state of emergency in Rivers State.

The president said he was “greatly disturbed about the political crisis” in the state and accused Governor Siminilayi Fubara of demolishing the State House of Assembly building.

Tinubu said having made an evaluation of the situation, he had decided to “declare a state of emergency from March 18”.

He also suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, Ngozi Odu, all elected members of the House of Assembly of the State and nominated Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas, Rtd, as Administrator to take charge of the affairs of the state.

Upon assumption of office, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas, on April 9, 2025, appointed administrators for the 23 Local Government Areas of the state, as the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Ibibia Worika disclosed in a Special Government Announcement

In the absence of the suspended Rivers House of Assembly, President Tinubu had last week written to the National Assembly for the consideration and passage of the 2025 budget of the Rivers State Government.

Tinubu said the N1.481 trillion budget is being presented to the National Assembly.

The President said this is in view of the nullification of the state’s 2025 budget by the Supreme Court, and the fact that the state is currently under emergency rule.

Recall that the Rivers Assembly has not been in session following the declaration of state of emergency in the state by the President on March 18, 2025.

Before presenting the state budget to the apex legislative body, the Rivers Sole Administrator had recovered two Toyota Hilux vehicles and one Hiace bus from Deputy governor of the state, Mrs Odu, saying it was a routine administrative action meant to secure State property.

Following some of the appointments made by Ibas, a Niger Delta human rights activist, Ann-Kio Briggs, had accused the sole administrator of pouring petrol to the fire President Bola Tinubu sent him to quench in the state.

This was as she said Ibas’s actions in the state were contrary to what the president sent him to do.

According to the activist, “…he [Ibas] has removed people who were constitutionally and democratically in governance,” talking about the Local Government Chairman who were suspended by the Sole administrator)

“There were no issues, and he came along and removed everybody.

“Even in the government house, it is alleged that he has removed the pictures of Siminalayi Fubara. I repeat Siminalayi Fubara remains the governor of Rivers State,” Ann-Kio Briggs said.

Also, a former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Prince Uche Secondus recently said that the actions of Ibas have set the state on a keg of gunpowder

He also implored President Tinubu to resist what he described as a misguided advice and restore Governor Siminalayi Fubara, who has the mandate of the people.

He said, “The President should be guided by the voice of reason by restoring Governor Similaya Fubara, who has the mandate of the people.

“The Sole Administrator’s activities have set Rivers State on a keg of gunpowder, and I weep for my state.

“Sadly Rivers State has found itself on the ugly side of history over the control of Resources and the state by one man.”

Ibas had defied the Port Harcourt Federal High Court ruling and appointed sole administrators for the 23 Local Government of the state.

He did this by suspending all the democratically elected LG chairmen for six months and appointed those that have been described as ‘Wike’s boys’ to run the affairs of the LGAs.

Ibas, among other things, had also dissolved the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission, RSIEC, and approved the reconstitution of the electoral body.

He announced the appointment of Michael Odey as the new Chairman with members: Mr Lezaasi Lenee Torbira- Member, Professor (Dr) Arthur Nwafor – Member, Professor Godfrey Woke Mbgudiogha – Member, Professor (Dame) Joyce Akaninwor – Member, Dr (Mrs) Olive A. Bruce – Member, Professor Chidi Halliday.

All members are allegedly loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.

All this put together, a Port Harcourt-based political activist, legal practitioner and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, Chizy Enyi, said he does not see democratic rule being restored in Rivers State soon.

He said that there was no indication that the President will restore the governor during his nationwide broadcast by May 29 as has been rumoured.

In an interview with DAILY POST, Mr. Enyi said, “For those saying that there is likelihood of cutting short the six month suspension of the governor, I think those people must be day dreaming.

“Assuming the president wants that, from today and May 29 that he will address the nation in less than one week, what is the essence of transmitting [Rivers State] budget to the National Assembly?

“Of what essence is it? If he lifts the suspension, the job of the National Assembly to take over the affairs of the Rivers State House of assembly will die down, and then that means that the budget before them will also die. All actions will die down.

“So presenting the appropriation bill of one point something trillion Naira to the National Assembly is evidence that the President is not ready for democratic rule to return to Rivers State.

“Anybody believing that the President will cut short the emergency rule in Rivers State, my dear brother, it is no no thing.

“But history will always repeat itself. We’ll always remember President Tinubu that he sent us too backward and when he was president, this is the extent he has done havoc in the River State.

“As we see currently, everything has been almost suspended because all the contractors have left the sights, including the most used company, Julius Berger has left the sights particularly the Omoku road, Port Harcourt Ring Road, Emehua Rd, and Ogbakiri Road.

“The company working on the Kalabari road has left the site, which one will we mention? Everything about construction has died down.

“And in fact, since there is no more democracy, there is also no more development in Rivers State and Mr President is happy. Do you know the irony of this, Mr president has stayed in office for about two years now he has not visited the Rivers state.

“Why then do we talk of such a person to help us to make progress? Even during his campaign, when he was consulting delegates in the APC, he never deemed it necessary to visit Rivers State.

“Rivers wasn’t part of the states he consulted the delegates during his primary. So he has no reason to even have us as one of the states he will help. So that is it.

“If the President is interested in democratic rule in River State, he has seen that the problem in the state is Wike vs the Governor, and Wike is his personal appointee, if he directs Wike to go and make peace, or he’ll be sacked, the man will have no option.

“Imagine the two gladiators fighting, his minister and the democratically elected Governor of the state and he suspended the governor, leaving his minister. It shows that he really has the minister as his own person, undermining all the democratic structures in Rivers, hence the illegal state of emergency.

“Now, assuming he was also suspended as a minister, Rivers people would have been looking at it from the way of ‘okay, he has refused to favour anybody, even though he knows that his actions are illegal.

“Because when we talked about the suspension of the governor, they said he averted the doomsday, how? The Constitution didn’t anticipate averting the doomsday. The Constitution says, allow the doomsday to come. That is the basis in which action should be taken.”

For Darlington Nwauju, the APC Spokesperson in Rivers State, the emergency rule and suspension of Governor Fubara would go beyond the six months declared by the President.

Mr Nwauju predicted that the emergency rule would be extended by the fact that the Sole administrator wants to stay longer as his actions and body language, according to the APC chieftain, could tell.

According to him, the purpose of declaring a State of emergency in Rivers State, which is primarily to restore peace in the state, has not been met as of today.

“Well, for me, once, we must understand that for every decision that is taken, there is what we call the manifest and the contextual reasons behind such decisions.

“I would agree that there was a Supreme Court decision on 28 February.

“Now as a fallout from that, one of the objectives for directing a state of emergency and a Sole administrator was to allow for all the worrying parties or factions to sheath swords.

“As of today, I cannot say for sure that peace has been restored. I cannot also say for sure that the warring factions have reached an amicable solution or resolution to all the issues, all the points of their grievances.

“Now, I must also point out the fact that in the course of this crisis, Rivers people, and indeed, Nigerians, have not been told in specific terms by both the elected Governor of the State, Sim Fubara and the FCT Minister what the actual [problem] is.

“The other man is saying that nobody should tamper with the structures, and we do not know what the structures are, because we know that in politics, political structures are merely party executives and all that and all that…

“However, we suspect that this whole structure change and this whole argument over political capture of Rivers State by the FCT Minister have everything to do with the resources of the Rivers state.

“Unfortunately, the man who has the mandate of the people of Rivers state to protect the resources of River State and his people has not also told us what the actual challenge is.

“It has only been the people bursting into the air trying to defend democratic structure of Rivers State.

“So far, I will not be able to do much about what is happening because one of the parties involved in this matter is choosing to keep a tight lip.

“He is rather choosing to swallow whatever that is being presented to him. So the question that an ordinary man on the street is now asking is, why must we now start crying more than bereaved?

“Because the man who was given the mandate to protect the resources has himself not told us what the actual issues are.

“Why must Rivers State now find itself in this quagmire which I perceive is ready to take beyond the six months mandate.

“I want to predict that the body language of the Sole administrator is and even his comments and all the attributions to him…gives him a way, as a man who is actually bending towards being beyond the six months period.

“This is based on the interplay of forces on ground in Rivers State, because the president cannot even do much if what is on ground tells him that all is now well in this state, and the people are ready to move away from the season of emergency rule, he [the President] would have no other option than to restore the democratic instructure.

“But I am saying that the interplay of forces, what is happening in Rivers state, it seems to me that the Sole administrator is bending, and if you like to go spiritual about it, is praying to stay beyond six months in the Government House of Rivers State.

“But it is only when the forces on ground, the political actors allow or permit or create the room for the emergency rule to be extended beyond six months, then we would see such an extended intervention.

“But when and if those on ground, the major political actors, have decided to sheath their sword and drop their ego because what I see is more like an ego business if you listen to their conversations.

“If you listen to the interviews of some of the actors, some of the people following Nyesom Wike, you agree with me, you will read in between the lines. You will see the devil in the details that all is not yet well.

“And if there is such a situation that gives room for an extension of the state of emergency, then on the balance of probability, I will not be surprised if this goes beyond the six months period,” he told DAILY POST

The APC chieftains, however, said that it would be for the best interest of democracy for the political actors to know that it should always be about the people and not about a set or class of individuals or the elite.
