1. My treasured people of Plateau State,

I speak to you today not only as your Governor, but as a fellow son of Plateau who shares in your anguish and feels the weight of the pain inflicted upon our people. We are once again confronted by sorrow as heart-wrenching attacks have taken the lives of innocent citizens in our communities.

2. In the late hours of Sunday, April 13th, the calm of Kimakpa area of Kwall District in Bassa LGA was shattered by violent assaults on Zike village. Innocent men, women, and children were murdered in cold blood. Homes were torched, properties ravaged, and entire families left in agony. These attacks occurred even as we were still mourning the loss of over 50 lives in Bokkos. The scale, frequency, and intent of these atrocities are unmistakable.

3. Let us be clear: this is not random violence. This is not an isolated conflict between farmers and herders. What we are witnessing is a systematic and premeditated campaign—one that seeks to displace, destabilize, and instill terror and fear on our people and communities. The tragic echoes of Dogo Na Hawa, Riyom, Barkin-Ladi, Mangu, and the Christmas Eve massacres in Bokkos remain vivid. The cycle continues, but it must not endure. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!

4. As your Governor, I stand resolved—Plateau shall not be overrun by fear, nor shall we accept this culture of bloodshed as the new normal. My administration is intensifying efforts to protect our people and enforce the rule of law across all local governments.

5. Only days ago, I visited Hurti, Mbar, Manguna, and Daffo to witness firsthand the devastation left behind by the terrorists. I had earlier stopped at Ruwi, where mourners were brazenly attacked at a wake. What I saw moved me profoundly—the suffering of displaced families now crammed into churches and temporary shelters, their lives uprooted overnight.

6. But let me reassure you: my government is alive to its constitutional responsibility of protecting lives and property, and we are rising to the occasion more determined than ever.

7. For far too long, our beloved State has made the headlines for the wrong reasons, thereby casting a shadow over our immense potential and deterring the inflow of much-needed foreign direct and local investments.

8. These investments could have been the catalyst for harnessing our abundant natural resources and lifting our people out of poverty. We cannot afford to let this unfortunate reality persist.

9. Despite this sorrow, the strength and courage of our people continue to inspire me. I extend heartfelt appreciation to the National and State Emergency Management Agencies for their prompt response in providing emergency aid and comfort to survivors.

10. Following these developments, I convened an emergency State Security Council meeting and have been in active consultation with federal security leadership, including the President, the Chief of Defence Staff, the Inspector General of Police, and the National Security Adviser. I’m grateful to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his concern and support, and for instructing security agencies to take decisive steps to apprehend the perpetrators of these attacks.

11. Security deployments are being reinforced, and Operation Rainbow is being restructured to support community stabilization efforts. Additionally, all hospitals in the region have been directed to provide free medical treatment to victims, and relief supplies are already being dispatched to affected communities.

12. To restore calm and strengthen vigilance, I hereby announce the following measures, effective Wednesday, April 16th:
●Night grazing of cattle is strictly prohibited.
●Transportation of cattle by vehicle is banned after 7:00 PM.
●The use of motorcycles is restricted from 7:00 PM to 6:00 AM across the state until further notice.

13. We are also activating community-based response systems. I urge traditional leaders and youth associations to reactivate local vigilante groups and organize night patrols in coordination with the security agencies. We must protect our communities while upholding the rule of law.

14. Furthermore, I have mandated the newly inaugurated Inter-Religious Council to begin immediate engagement with all stakeholders to address the deeper issues surrounding these attacks. I shall also be appointing a Special Envoy on Peace to lead grassroots consultations and intelligence coordination.

15. A Fact-Finding Committee comprising respected independent voices will be constituted to investigate the root cause of this resurgence in violence and offer actionable recommendations.

16. Let it be known: the Plateau spirit is resilient. We are a people of peace, renowned for our hospitality and unity across religious and ethnic lines. Those who seek to tear us apart must not succeed.

17. To the grieving families in Bokkos, Bassa, and beyond, you may be tempted to think that our security architecture has failed, but let me reassure you that more than before, I am determined to find lasting solutions to keep you safe. I extend my deepest sympathies. Your loss is our collective sorrow. And to all Plateau people, I urge calm, vigilance, and solidarity. Report suspicious movements. Cooperate with law enforcement agents. Reject retaliation. Justice will be pursued with resolve.

18. Let us rise above fear and bitterness and unite to reclaim our land and dignity. Let us protect what is ours—not through violence, but through courage, wisdom, and love for one another.

19. To our development partners, national and international, we thank you for your continued support. Your solidarity is a source of strength in these trying times. Let me also appreciate all Nigerians home and in diaspora and our friends across the globe for your prayers, support and encouragement. We are truly grateful.

20. To the killers and their sponsors, know this: your evil shall not go unpunished. You may run, but you will not hide. Plateau will definitely continue its rise. Nothing will stop it. Plateau will prevail. Plateau will not fall. Plateau will stand tall. Plateau will continue to flourish, to the Glory of God.

A former governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, has accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration of incompetence, nepotism and betrayal of the founding ideals of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

El-Rufai, who recently dumped the APC for the Social Democratic Party (SDP), alleged that Nigeria had been moving backwards since Tinubu assumed office on May 29, 2023.

He made the allegation during an interview with Deutsche Welle Hausa in Katsina. El-Rufai was in Katsina on Monday, but the video of the interview was released Tuesday.

El-Rufai, once a close ally of President Tinubu and a key figure in the APC’s electoral victories in 2015, 2019 and 2023, now presents himself as one of the fiercest critics of the administration, alleging that what the APC has become is a far cry from what its founders envisioned.

According to the ex-governor, the country is worse off today in terms of insecurity, economy and governance than it was under previous administrations.

‘Country retrogressing’

El-Rufai alleged that the Tinubu-led administration was the most intolerant since the return to democracy in 1999.

He also accused Tinubu’s administration of being insensitive to the plight of ordinary Nigerians.

“Ever since the assumption of office of Tinubu as Nigeria’s president, the country has begun to go backwards. Insecurity has increased, the economy is dwindling, affluent people are now poor, and ethnic profiling is on the rise.

“Whoever he is giving an appointment to must be someone he knows or from his tribe. They can dismiss that, but Nigerians are not stupid. There is no way your name is this, and they will say no, you are from Katsina,” he stated.

‘APC no longer represents justice, equity’

“This kind of injustice, ethnic profiling, and theft that we are seeing is not what APC was built on. What we planned when we started building APC was a platform for justice, equity, competence, and national integration. But today, we see nothing but sheer injustice, nepotism, and disregard for those ideals,” El-Rufai said.

He explained that those were the reasons behind his decision to join the SDP which he described as a party that would “rescue the masses from injustice.”

“So, whoever his party cheated or did something he felt was not right, the only party he sees is the SDP. So, don’t be surprised by the kind of people you see in this room and others that are not here—we are working together in broad daylight and midnight doing what we should do to strategise in order to salvage our people from what this government has put us through,” he stated.

Responding to concerns that his journey with the SDP could end up like his earlier alliance with the APC, El-Rufai insisted that it was the APC that strayed from its founding ideals, not him.

“I did not leave APC; it’s the party that left me. Since Bola Tinubu became president, the country has started to go backwards. We told them what they are doing is not good, and they are always behaving like nobody can tell them anything.

“Even when they deny the allegation of nepotism, people are not blind or stupid. When they see the names, they know where they come from,” he said.

El-Rufai recalled meeting with APC leaders like Bisi Akande, Adams Oshiomhole and Abdullahi Adamu to tell them that the party had deviated from its founding vision.

“I met with Bisi Akande, Adams Oshiomhole and Abdullahi Adamu, and I asked them if this was what we had planned for the people when we started and registered our party. And they said it has changed.

“So, if it has changed, then should you stay in what you are not okay with? I spoke with leaders that we should come back to the radar, but they shunned us away,” he said.

He said the fact that the APC refused to convene meetings for two years demonstrated the party’s leadership’s disregard for internal democracy and collective decision-making.

“That is why I said it is the party that left me, so I have to look for a party that shares similarity with the kind of ideology we had when 37 of us signed for the registration of the APC. I am among them. I am a founding father.

“But even if it is a child you gave birth to and he went wayward and you tried your best to bring him back on track and he refused, then you let him be. I have sworn off APC and left it with the world,” he said.

‘Ruling party only remembered Buhari after my defection’

El-Rufai also reacted to the recent visit by APC National Working Committee members to former President Muhammadu Buhari, alleging that it was an afterthought motivated by political desperation.

“Is it not the same Ganduje that called Buhari ‘Habu na Habu’ (a derogatory Hausa name)? Is it now that he knows Buhari is important?

“Since when Buhari left government, how many times did they go to him seeking for a single piece of advice? It is when they heard that I went to Buhari and I left the APC. And I told him before I left. I didn’t go to him to ask him to come to SDP or seek his permission to leave the party—I am 65 years old. I only went to tell him that this party has changed, and I want to leave it.

“Two days later, I left. It was after I left that they remembered that Buhari is important. What took them was that they understood that Atiku Abubakar went with us to pay Sallah homage; that’s all, and they went running at midnight, denying an old man sleep and disturbing him,” he added.

‘SDP building nationwide momentum’

El-Rufai said the SDP was rapidly gaining support across the country because many Nigerians had grown tired of both the APC and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

He added that the SDP was preparing a movement that would “rock the foundation of the country” and return power to the people.

“Every state you go to, you see people queuing, trying to get SDP tickets because they are tired of the injustice of these old parties — PDP and APC. And people have seen the kind of leaders coming to the SDP. They are positive that justice will be served and people will be held accountable. They believe they will be saved from hunger, poverty, and all the ills we are facing today in this country.

“Everywhere, not only in Katsina. My chairman, Bello Safana, when he goes to his office, doesn’t leave until late in the night because of the kind of people trooping in. It is the same everywhere—in Kaduna, Niger, Borno, Gombe. Everywhere it’s like that. People are tired,” he alleged.

The former governor said many Nigerians still remembered what he and others did in the past and believed in their capacity to effect positive change.

“Some of us are all aware of what we did in the past, and they know what we can do. That’s why, God willing, with the prayers of the masses, a storm is coming that will wipe off the entire country.

“All these bad leaders will go back to their villages, and SDP will form the federal government and many state governments and will come with a new form of leadership that caters to the poor,” he said.

El-Rufai’s past criticisms of Tinubu and APC

El-Rufai, whose ministerial nomination in 2023 was blocked by his opponents within the ruling APC, recently became a vocal critic of both the party and Tinubu’s administration.

At a democracy conference in Abuja in January, he had accused the Tinubu government of undermining democracy and attempting to weaken the opposition.

Following his defection to the SDP in March, El-Rufai revisited the controversy surrounding Tinubu’s academic records, saying he and other politicians were aware of the issues before the 2023 elections but supported him in the hope he would replicate his performance in Lagos.

“What pains me is that the government we supported and had confidence in would do well because we saw what Tinubu did in Lagos despite his challenges. We all knew about his issues in Chicago, but we thought if he could replicate his work in Lagos for Nigeria, let’s support him. However, he failed,” he said.

On 15 March, El-Rufai criticised the administration’s handling of the political crisis in Rivers State, particularly the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara and other elected officials.

“In a statement on his X handle, he, at that time, described the president’s action as “wanton aggression against democratic tenets and the rule of law.”

“There are things that are so clearly wrong that the justifications summoned in their defence fall flat. The decision of Mr. President to suspend the elected officials of the Rivers State Government is one of those,” he wrote.

Presidency mum

When contacted to react to the allegations by El-Rufai, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, told Daily Trust “I need to read El-Rufai’s statement first.”

Agbakoba had suggested a resolution in the case by Mrs Akpoti-Uduaghan against Akpabio.

He also urged her to substantiate her allegations.

But the Kogi Central Senator rejected the idea, insisting that Akpabio should subject himself to an investigation.

Asked if she would accept to settle with Akpabio, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan told The Nation: “Out-of-court settlement? To settle how? Who? What about how I felt? I don’t know how to explain it.

“To me, am not looking for an out-of-court settlement. I don’t think I’m looking for an out-of-court settlement for today. As of now, an out-of-court settlement is out of it.

“I am not considering an out-of-court settlement because nobody has to suffer this amount of intimidation just because she is speaking out her truth.

“They should have investigated it. It is not about settlement, it is about justice. It is very painful that you subject somebody to so much.

“I am not looking forward to an out-of-court settlement. He should subject himself to an investigation.

“Besides, Akpabio is denting the image of the President. Akpabio’s actions are sending a negative signal on President Tinubu’s government.”

Agbakoba urged the senator should tender more proof as she had promised to do in her media interviews.

He reporters in Lagos that the allegations were hanging without substantial evidence.

He said: “We request Senator Natasha to provide more evidence, particularly in furtherance to the fact that she previously stated she reserves the right to provide further particulars and evidence to support the allegations against the Senate President.

“We feel like the allegation as it currently stands falls short of the threshold for proving sexual harassment anywhere in the world.”

Agbakoba, who had written to Mrs. Akpoti-Uduaghan as counsel for Akpabio to supply more proof, said he accepted the brief in a conciliatory manner.

He also “honestly wishes” that the matter is resolved without going to court, adding that he had requested a meeting with Mrs Akpoti-Uduaghan’s lawyers.

Agbakoba clarified that at this stage, the Senator is not to be believed or disbelieved, stressing that she would need to clarify the difference between her behaviour between December 8 and 9, 2023.

The SAN described sexual harassment as a serious matter that deserves careful and fair consideration, adding that the difficulty faced by anyone making the allegation and the importance of treating all parties with dignity should be acknowledged.

However, the senior lawyer said the review of the available public records revealed significant contradictions that must be considered for a fair evaluation of the situation.

According to him, proper institutional processes, rather than media forums, should provide an appropriate venue for addressing serious matters.

Agbakoba insisted that while he supports a society where individuals feel safe to speak up, the principles of justice that require evidence and fairness should be upheld.

He stressed: “Allegations, however serious, must be scrutinised with diligence and care to avoid situations where they are being weaponised for vendetta.

“Our legal system is built on the presumption of innocence until proven guilty, and this fundamental principle must be respected, even in sensitive cases.”

Noting that Mrs. Akpoti-Uduaghan had said she would submit material evidence and present further particulars and facts, he expressed surprise that she had withheld the evidence.

The former Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) said this is unusual.

Agbakoba noted that Mrs. Akpoti-Uduaghan’s local and international engagements have highlighted the global attention her allegations have garnered in the past weeks.

Emphasising the contradictions between her claims and subsequent behaviour, he said Mrs Akpoti-Uduaghan who made a serious allegation turned to her Instagram to also eulogise Akpabio and spoke highly of the birthday event she attended in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

He pointed out that while Mrs Akpoti-Uduaghan claimed that sexual harassment occurred on December 8, which was her birthday and that of Akpabio, she praised the Senate President on December 9.

The lawyer stressed: “The timeline and dates are so contradictory. On one hand, you complained about sexual harassment on December 8, 2023.

“Yet, on the other, you praised Senator Akpabio who you allege sexually harassed you on December 9, 2023. 

“The juxtaposition of these two events, an alleged traumatic harassment followed by voluntary, public expression of admiration requires careful consideration.”

Agbakoba acknowledged that there is no defined or definite description of harassment, saying that it could be in words or behaviour.

He doubted any absolute physical act in respect of Mrs. Akpoti-Uduaghan and Akpabio.

Urging critics to do with unguarded emotion, Akpabio said “98 per cent of what you see on social media is not court-useable.”

In many ways the recent resignation of Hakeem Baba Ahmed as Political Adviser to Vice President Kashim Shettima confirms the worst kept political secret in the land: that the gulf existing between President Bola Tinubu and Vice-President Kashim Shettima has widened to the point of no return.

It is no longer a secret that President Tinubu does not trust nor have confidence in his Vice President. Indeed a presidency source told me that things have got so bad that the president never meets Shettima one-on-one. Vice-President Shettima is placed only on a ‘’need to know’’ basis on sensitive polices and even at that not all the details of such policies are disclosed to him. Memos from the Vice President and those of his staff are subjected to levels of vetting and watered down such that when they eventually land on the president’s desk for his attention, they are devoid of their essence and meaning. All Ministers and appointees of the presidency and the administration are forbidden from giving him detailed briefs on their tasks and for their own good they try to limit their contact and involvement with the VP to a cursory level.

The cold war between President Tinubu and his Vice so far not fully blown, has however prompted comparisons between the experiences of Professor Yemi Osinbajo, Vice President under the immediate past administration of President Muhammadu Buhari and that of Shettima.

In culinary terms the difference in experience under their principals could be likened to the difference between Ikokore, the popular Ijebu delicacy which I am told the former Vice President being an Ijebu man relishes, and Burabisco, the favourite Kanuri dish which Shettima as a dyed-in-wool Kanuri man likes a lot. As the two dishes are made of different ingredients and are enjoyed by in different parts of the country, so also are the experiences of the two VPs under their bosses.

Although the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria recognises and ipso facto specifies roles for the Vice President in the functioning of the administration, in reality the VP’s relevance can only be subject to the disposition of the president.

For instance, although the constitution provides for the VP to chair the National Economic Council (NEC) made up of state governors, the president can work to make the council irrelevant. This is what happened when VP Shettima at the head of the NEC led the governors to present their informed views on the Tax Reform bill. We all knew that president Tinubu threw the bill at the VP and the governors’ faces and brusquely told them he preferred his own version of the bill which he was going to send to the National Assembly.

By contrast, Osinbajo as VP was in full charge of the NEC as its Chair and from that vantage point recommended and actively implemented economic and social programmes running to billions of naira.

Apart from not being allowed such powers under Tinubu, since his run-in with the president over the Tax Reform bill, Shettima has literarily had the door shut firmly against his face as far as economic and social matters which the constitution grants him.

Professor Osinbajo was the cerebral intellectual power house of the Buhari administration and his erudition and depth of knowledge provided the government with the much needed air of competence to cover up the lapses of some the officials of the government. Perhaps fully aware of this, president Buhari gave Osinbajo the full encouragement and thrust to be the face of the administration making speeches and representing him frequently at public and private occasions.

Osinbajo was given the latitude to choose his team which included a Special Adviser on Media and Political Affairs as well as other necessary staff who functioned as independently as possible without interference from the President’s office.

VP Shettima too was allowed his complement of aides. But the point of departure is that whereas VP Osinbajo’s aides Laolu Akande for Media and Babafemi Ojudu on political affairs functioned effectively in their positions, Stanley Nkwocha and Hakeem Baba Ahmed appointed in respective positions under VP Shettima’s office have hadly been heard. Indeed the resignation of Hakeem Baba Ahmed, former Federal Permanent Secretary and Secretary-General of the Northern Elders Forum (NEF) was connected to the belittling role he had been subjected in the presidency. He was not given any schedule and befitting office. He also was not allowed unfettered access to the media. He could not engage the media on the VP’s political perspectives; he was virtually a political glorified desk officer in the VP office reduced to drinking tea and ‘’enjoying’’ the central air conditioner there. For someone who is known to be articulate, erudite and with such a vast and distinguished experience in politics and governance and who enjoys frequent media attention, restricting Hakeem Baba Ahmed’s visibility and interventions as he was in the Tinubu presidency was like taking a fish out of water. There was no way that Hakeem Baba Ahmed would take that sort of treatment lying low.

That VP Osinbajo was accorded his rightful place in the Buhari was due largely to the laissez faire disposition of president Buhari. Buhari was known to allow his appointees the latitude to work without too much interference in order to allow them deliver on the tasks assigned to them.

But president Tinubu is not only known as a micro-manager he also has an unapologetic disposition towards favouring people from his ethnic comfort zone to work with him. From what we have seen of him, president Tinubu clearly does not feel comfortable having people from other ethnic nationalities working too closely with him.
VP Shettima may not have committed any weighty official breaches of official protocol in the presidency, but president Tinubu’s in built paranoia and discomfort in the midst of people he considers as belonging outside of his bloodlines and his political and ethnic comfort zone is largely responsible for the short shrift being given to VP Shettima in the presidency.

Going forward president Tinubu clearly faces a dilemma on what to do with VP Shettima. He is obviously not enamoured of the VP and cannot be persuaded to retain him in the coming months. But the president knows distinctly that dropping the VP off the ticket presents a very delicate and dangerous political manoeuvre. It was with Shettima that he was able to navigate the difficult challenges of the 2023 presidential race and won. Removing Shettima now would amount to a tactical political miscalculation. Who to replace Shettima with that will give him the political traction with northern voters he desperately needs for re-election in 2027?

If he intends to keep the Muslim-Muslim ticket a host of names have been thrown into the equation; Nuhu Ribadu, Abdullahi Ganduje, Kwankwaso etc.

But anybody he chooses now will be a hard sell to northern voters. The mere fact of replacing Shettima with another figure will reinforce the feeling that Tinubu cannot be trusted to respect political agreements. And this could even rupture the ruling APC.
There are reports too that president Tinubu may change tack and replace Shettima with a northern Christian namely former Speaker Yakubu Dogara, former SGF Boss Mustapha, Senator Simon Lalong etc.

If Tinubu cannot be sure of a huge northern Christian votes tally to tip the scales in his favour this will amount to political suicide to say the least.

As Governor of Lagos state, Tinubu was able to whimsically change three deputies; Kofo Bucknor, Femi Pedro and Adeyemi Ogunleye without fear of political recriminations. As president he is now faced with three options all of which have potential consequences; he cannot retain Shettima because the gulf between them has become insurmountable; if he drops him and picks another Muslim he risks a rupture in the ruling party and if he decides to go for a northern Christian replacement he will most likely bring the house down.

As he sits presently in limbo under the Tinubu presidency, waiting to see how and where the dice rolls VP Shettima will be hoping for the best under the circumstances.

Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State yesterday apologised to the people of Bassa Local Government Area for the failure of government and security agencies to protect lives and properties, as condemnations trailed the killings.

This is as a survivor of the attack lamented that his sister wouldn’t have died if she had not, out of fear, run out of her hiding.

The governor’s apology came on a day former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, Presidential candidate of New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP, in the 2023 elections, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, ex-governor of Plateau State, Jonah Jang, and the northern chapter of Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, condemned the killings and tasked government to punish the perpetrators. Recall that no fewer than 52 persons were killed last Sunday night at Zike community of the LGA, barely two weeks after same number of persons were slaughtered in Bokkos Local Government Area of the state, bringing the total killed to 104.

The governor, who gave the apology at the palace of the Paramount Ruler of Miango community of the state, said: “I will tell you the truth, I have been crying since yesterday (Monday) because I had trusted God that all the arrangements were put in place, that this will not happen again. We have made investments in security. “But like all human arrangements, sometimes they fail. I want to admit that on Sunday night into Monday morning, we failed you. Please, forgive me.”

He urged the people not to relent in their efforts to secure their communities and ensure that they complement security agencies’ efforts by providing vital information for intelligence gathering and expose the antics of the criminals.

Governor Mutfwang, who was in the company of security chiefs and members of the state executive council, was in Zikke community to commiserate with the people on the death of over fifty persons killed in the attacks.
In his remarks, the Paramount Ruler of Irigwe land, Ronku Aka, who is the Brangwe of Irigwe, urged government to come to the aid of the communities with the provision of social amenities in the area. The governor and the entourage also visited some of the families who lost their loved ones in the attack.

The victims have been buried, even as members of the community demanded action to stem the rising wave of insecurity in the state.

My sister got killed when she left our hiding place — Survivor

A survivor of the attack lamented the palpable fear that prompted his sister to run out of their hiding place and got killed when the attackers invaded their home.“The survivor, Eric Danlami, said they were asleep when the invaders came into the hamlet at about midnight, as the sounds of gunshots and the pandemonium woke them.“His words: “We had retired to bed in the night without any form of suspicion of any kind of problems.

At the time we heard the sporadic gunshots and movement of the people, we found a place to hide in one of the rooms, not knowing that the attackers had already entered our elder brother’s apartment at the boy’s quarters and slaughtered them, a family of five.“”His wife and first son survived and are currently in the hospital, but my sister, whom we were hiding together in a room, was afraid that they would enter the house.

As she left the place we were hiding to go to another hiding place, she was sighted. They shot at her and she didn’t survive it.

IGP speaks of deployment of more personnel, resources

The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, who was also in the state yesterday, said the days of perpetrators of attacks on rural communities in Plateau State were numbered and assured the people of the Federal Government’s commitment to ensuring adequate security in the state.“He said: “We condemn these acts of violence and recognise their devastating impact, especially on local farmers. In response, we have deployed more security personnel and resources to the affected areas and are working closely with other security agencies.

”Intelligence gathering efforts have also been intensified to identify and bring the masterminds behind these attacks to justice. We will work tirelessly until these issues are resolved. I assure you that these criminal elements will soon be outnumbered. I appeal to the people of Plateau to remain calm and peaceful.”

PIDAN demands justice for victims

Meanwhile, the President of Plateau Initiative for Development and Advancement of the Natives, PIDAN, the umbrella body of the 56 autonomous communities in Plateau State, Amb. Nanpon Sheni, at a media briefing, demanded justice for the victims through accelerated arrest and prosecution of the perpetrators.

“The peaceful indigenous tribes of Plateau State have been subjected to sustained acts of genocide by terrorist groups connected to global terrorist networks. They perpetrate heinous acts such as rape of women and girls, assaults on houses of worship and kidnapping.

“If these attacks remain unchecked, its ramifications for Nigeria’s stability, security and prosperity will be catastrophic. We call on the international community, the federal, and state governments and all stakeholders to acknowledge the gravity of the plight of Nigerians under this siege and take immediate action to push back terrorism.

“We demand justice for the victims of terrorism and genocide through the accelerated prosecutions as promised by the President.

Nigerians dying from Tinubu’s incompetence — Atiku

Reacting to the killings, former Vice President and 2023 presidential candidate of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, blamed President Bola Tinubu’s administration for the recent spike in deadly attacks across the state, accusing the government of incompetence and failure to protect lives.

In a strongly-worded statement posted on his official Facebook page yesterday, Atiku expressed deep sorrow over the killing of at least 52 persons in Zike community, Kwali district of Bassa Local Government Area, just days after a similar tragedy in Bokkos LGA, underlining what he described as “the worsening state of security in our country.

“I am deeply saddened and alarmed by the resurgence of violent attacks in Plateau State.” Atiku wrote further.
“It is regrettable and entirely unacceptable that these Nigerians had to lose their lives as a result of the incompetence of the Tinubu-led administration.

”The protection of lives and property is the primary responsibility of any government. Unfortunately, President Tinubu has failed these citizens and continues to fail them.”

Beyond Plateau, the former vice president also decried the rising tide of terrorism in Borno State, citing statements from Borno State governor, Babagana Zulum, and the Shehu of Borno, which indicated growing losses in both lives and territory to insurgents.

“These disturbing developments underscore the total collapse of the current administration’s security policy and architecture,” Atiku said.

He further criticized the Federal Government’s failure to bring terrorists and bandits to justice, noting that some suspects arrested as far back as 2016 are yet to be prosecuted.

He added: “If the same level of urgency and energy were devoted to the prosecution of terrorists as we have seen applied to the trials of political critics, we would have sent a clear and forceful message that crime has nsequences.’

He also condemned the failure to prevent cross-border incursions by armed groups, labeling it a “national disgrace.”

Perpetrators must be brought to book — Kwankwaso

On hs part, the presidential candidate of New Nigeria People’s Party, NNPP, in 2023 election, Sen. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, called on the relevant authorities to ensure that perpetrators of the heinous killings in Plateau State were brought to book.

He also urged the relevant authorities to rise to their responsibility to ensure the state was not allowed to become a hotbed of violence by ensuring that all lives and properties were protected.

Kwankwaso in a post on his verified Facebook handle said: “I am saddened to learn of the attack on Zike community, Kimakpa, in Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State, which resulted in the death of 52 people and destruction of several properties.

“This sad attack came after over fifty persons were killed within a week in attacks over five communities in the state.

“It is important that Plateau State must not be allowed to become a hotbed of violence and wanton destruction again after the relative peace it has enjoyed in recent years.

“The Federal Government must rise to its responsibility to ensure that all lives and properties are protected and the message of peace should be embraced by everyone in the state and beyond.

Killings in Plateau, agenda by known group — Jang

In his reaction, former governor of Plateau State and ex-senator representing Plateau North senatorial district, Jonah Jang, condemned the recurring spate of killings in the state, saying the attacks and killing of over 100 lives within two week was painful.“

He advised President Tinubu to convene an expanded meeting with community leaders to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the situation in Plateau State, adding that such a meeting will provide a platform for stakeholders to share insights and experiences, and enable the President develop a more informed approach to tackling the problem.“

In a statement issued in Jos yesterday, Jang said: “Let’s call a spade a spade, I offer my deepest condolences to the government and people of Plateau State in the wake of the recent wave of attacks that have claimed numerous innocent lives. ”These senseless killings have caused pain and suffering for our great state and its people, and we must take immediate action to put an end to this violence. “I commend Governor Caleb Mutfwang for his tireless efforts to find a lasting solution to this crisis. His dedication to the safety and well-being of Plateau citizens is truly commendable. I also applaud President Bola Tinubu for his determination to stop the senseless killings of innocent citizens.

”His commitment to protecting the lives of Nigerians, particularly those in Plateau State, is a positive step forward.

“However, I believe it is important to address a misconception in the President’s recent statement directing Governor Mutfwang to resolve the ‘communal issue.’ This suggestion appears to stem from inaccurate briefings by his advisers.

”The attacks in Plateau State are not merely communal disputes; they are perpetrated by a known group with a specific agenda. It is crucial for the President to understand the true nature of these attacks in order to address them effectively.

Additionally, I advise President Tinubu to convene an expanded meeting with community leaders to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the situation in Plateau State. Such a meeting would provide a platform for stakeholders to share their insights and experiences, as this will enable the President to develop a more informed approach to tackling this problem.

The former Plateau governor urged the people of the state to remain strong and resist any attempts to undermine their existence.

“As peace-loving and welcoming citizens, we have endured enough. It is time for us to defend ourselves against these aggressors and demand justice. I call upon the people of Plateau State to stay united, vigilant and proactive in the face of these attacks,” he said.

Northern CAN condemns killings in Plateau

Similarly, the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, in Northern Nigeria, under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Yakubu Pam, also strongly condemned the brutal killings in Bassa Local Government Area of the state.

CAN in a statement signed by the chairman, Rev. Yakubu Pam, said the Christian body was deeply saddened and outraged by the senseless and barbaric attacks that claimed the lives of innocent and peace-loving citizens.

These repeated acts of violence are not only a violation of human dignity and the sanctity of life, but they are also a direct threat to the peace and unity of our state and the nation at large.“’Northern CAN stands in solidarity with the grieving families and the entire people of Bassa LGA in this moment of pain. We call on security agencies to act swiftly and decisively to apprehend the perpetrators and bring them to justice.

”We also urge the government at all levels to take proactive steps to protect vulnerable communities and prevent further loss of lives.”

Rev. Dr. Yakubu Pam reiterated that the time had come for all stakeholders, including traditional rulers, religious leaders, security operatives, and community-based organizations, to unite in purpose and work together to end the cycle of violence that had plagued Plateau State for far too long.“”We pray for peace, healing, and justice. Plateau must not bleed again,” Rev Pam added.

The Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) says it shared a total sum of N1.57 trillion to the three tiers of government as federation allocation for March.

In February, FAAC shared N1.67 trillion among the three tiers of government, from a gross total of N2.34 trillion.

This indicates the total amount shared in March declined by N100 billion or 5.98 percent.

In a communiqué issued at the end of FAAC’s April meeting chaired by Wale Edun, minister of finance and coordinating minister of the economy, on Tuesday, the ministry said the total revenue distributable was drawn from a gross revenue of N2.411 trillion

According to Mohammed Manga, director of information and public relations at the ministry, the gross revenue comprised statutory revenue, value-added tax (VAT), electronic money transfer levy (EMTL), and exchange difference.

The communique said the federal government received N528.69 billion, the states got N530.44 billion, local government councils received N387.002 billion, and oil-producing states received N132.611 billion as derivation (13 percent of mineral revenue)

Manga added that N85.37 billion was given for the cost of collection, and N747.180 billion was allocated for transfers, intervention and refunds.

‘VAT DECLINED TO N637.61BN’

The director said VAT decreased by N16.83 billion or 2.57 percent, and gross statutory revenue increased by N65.42 billion or 3.93 percent.

“The communique issued by the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) at the end of the meeting indicated that the Gross Revenue available from the Value Added Tax (VAT) for the month of March 2025, was N637.618 Billion as against N654.456 Billion distributed in the preceeding month, resulting in a decrease of N16.838 Billion,” he said.

“From that amount, the sum of N25.505 Billion was allocated for the cost of collection and the sum of N18.363 Billion given for Transfers, Intervention and Refunds.

“The remaining sum of N593.750 Billion was distributed to the three tiers of government, of which the Federal Government got N89.063 Billion, the States received N296.875 Billion and Local Government Councils got N207.813 Billion.

“Accordingly, the Gross Statutory Revenue of N1.718 Trillion received for the month was higher than the sum of N1.653 Trillion received in the previous month by N65.422 Billion. From the stated amount, the sum of N58.831 Billion was allocated for the cost of collection and a total sum of N728.817 Billion for Transfers, Intervention and Refunds.

“The remaining balance of N931.325 Billion was distributed as follows to the three tiers of government: Federal Government got the sum of N422.485 Billion, States received N214.290 Billion, the sum of N165.209 Billion was allocated to LGCs and N129.341 Billion was given to Derivation Revenue (13% Mineral producing States).

“Also, the sum of N26.011 Billion from Electronic Money Transfer Levy (EMTL) was distributed to the three (3) tiers of government as follows: the Federal Government received N3.746 Billion, States got N12.485 Billion, Local Government Councils received N8.740 Billion, while N1.040 Billion was allocated for Cost of Collection.”

The communique also said N28.71 billion from exchange difference was shared among the three tiers of government.

Manga said that from the amount, the federal government got N13.40 billion, states received N6.79 billion, local government councils got N5.241 billion, and oil-producing states received N3.270 billion.

The director added that petroleum profit tax (PPT) and the companies income tax (CIT) increased considerably, but oil and gas royalty, VAT, EMTL, excise duty, import duty and CET levies recorded a decrease.

To spoil a ship for a ha’porth of tar is an English idiomatic expression that talks about destroying something big by not spending a small amount to maintain it. That typifies the lifestyle of the average Nigerian. We simply lack a maintenance culture. We buy a car but fail to adhere to the manual’s instructions for regular and periodic maintenance. Check out some car tyres, windscreen, wipers, and car doors, and you will be shocked at how a car that is not up to five years old has become a jalopy. We build houses and a lackadaisical attitude to maintenance makes the house become dilapidated in next to no time. The door handles, plumbing, fittings, electrical appliances, tiles, water closet, water tanks, and furniture all become dysfunctional or spoilt due to the owner’s indifference to proper maintenance.

Similarly, many hotels that look beautiful on the outside are shitholes when you lodge in them. It is either that the water heater is not working, the air conditioner is not working, some taps are leaking, or the towels and bedspreads are dirty. Some hotels have never changed their blankets and duvets since inception, nor are they regularly dry-cleaned. Sometimes the room stinks. I have also been to many public buildings and government secretariats where the elevators have broken down, and visitors have to climb the staircase to get to the floors they need to take elevators to reach. This is because the elevators have broken down due to a lack of proper maintenance. Many toilets in government offices are an eyesore. It is either that there is no water to flush or that the water closet lever is dysfunctional. The furniture in many government and public offices is wobbling. Workers share offices with rodents and roaches because they are never fumigated.

Check out the state of our roads and bridges. Be they federal, state or local government roads, they have become infested with graters and gullies and have become death traps due to a lack of proper maintenance. Bandits and kidnappers take advantage of these bad roads to carry out their nefarious activities, as vehicles plying such bad roads have to slow down at these bad spots. Last month, the Federal Ministry of Works shut down the Independence Bridge along Ahmadu Bello Way, Marina-bound on Victoria Island, Lagos. The Federal Controller of Works, Lagos, Olukorede Kesha, said the closure was to facilitate essential maintenance and rehabilitation works on the bridge from Wednesday, March 19 to May 31, 2025. News reports have it that the bridge closure brought about untold hardship on commuters plying the area. In fact, many motorists spent the entire night of the first day of the bridge closure on the road due to the gridlock. Meanwhile, it was discovered that one of the pillars holding the bridge is just floating, as the soil holding it has been eroded by water. A lack of periodic maintenance did not allow the ministry officials to notice this early enough.

While pipeline vandalism is one of the menaces being faced by the Nigerian government. However, some of the oil and water pipes have corroded and are leaking due to a lack of periodic maintenance. Imagine that some oil pipelines laid in the early sixties that are to be replaced every 10 years are left unchanged and, after a while, begin to leak and thereby degrade the soil and the environment. Similarly, the lack of routine turnaround maintenance of our four oil refineries in Warri, Port Harcourt and Kaduna led to Nigeria’s overdependence on the importation of refined petroleum products. Did you know what economic loss this has inflicted on Nigeria? We lost jobs, businesses, foreign exchange and prestige.

The administration of President Muhammadu Buhari borrowed $1.5bn reportedly from a Chinese bank to carry out the turnaround maintenance on Port Harcourt and Warri refineries. Despite that, after several failed deadlines, NNPCL informed Nigerians in December 2024 that those two refineries had been restreamed to commence operation, but not at full capacity. Nonetheless, it is the privately owned Dangote Refinery and Petrochemical that has come to the rescue of Nigerians, as production from government-owned Port Harcourt and Warri is inadequate for our domestic consumption needs.

A lack of or inadequate and timely maintenance is always costly. As the saying goes, prevention is better than a cure. If all and sundry embrace proper maintenance culture, the lifespan of our objects will be longer. We will even spend less. Given the fact that the cost of goods and services is skyrocketing, a prompt maintenance culture will ensure that we spend less today to prevent spending more tomorrow. Imagine how much we are having to spend on the maintenance of the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway? I am sure the amount is far more than what was spent to build the road in the first place. It is a lack of proper maintenance of our national assets, like the Nigerian Airways, Nigeria Railway Corporation, Nigeria National Shipping Line, and Nigeria Telecommunications, better known as NITEL, that led to the death of these government-owned enterprises. Thankfully, the Federal Government has deemed it fit to revitalise the Nigerian Railway Corporation. It is heartwarming that train services have been restored in South-West Nigeria from Lagos to Ibadan, Abuja Municipality and Abuja to Kaduna, to mention a few.

Maintenance culture is not all about items or objects. What about our bodies as human beings? How many of us go for routine medical check-ups? How many of us even go to hospitals when sick? Many prefer self-medication. Some go to quacks and unlicensed medicine stores for medications. This lack of proper maintenance of our bodies through routine medical checks, healthy living, exercising, dieting, relaxation and sleeping adequately is the major cause of terminal sicknesses and untimely deaths.

Concerned people are asking why so much terrorism is going on the Plateau and across the Middle Belt region of Nigeria on such a horrific scale. And the word that keeps going round is that the terrorists are aliens from the Sahel.

Gen. T.Y. Danjuma, Nigeria’s former Chief of Army Staff and Minister of Defense, who confirmed “that most of (the terrorists) are foreigners, (though) there are (local) collaborators”, lamented, “The whole country is overrun.”

The horror of the renegade’s invasion is captured in an amateur, but gory, video that shows people offloading corpses of those they claimed were casualties of recent attacks in Plateau State to the front of a massive white building that they claimed was a government state house.

If those individuals indeed dumped the corpses in front of a state government house, they would have added more numbers to the casualties, if the sentries had decided to mow them down for breaching state house security. 

But it must be acknowledged that it was a brilliant public relations stunt to draw attention to the helplessness of the people of the Plateau, victims of the reign of terror that has now almost become a regular ritual.

A young female poet laureate, who says she is from the North, but her blood carries many names, recited an indicting dirge on the assault on the lives and lands of the people of the Plateau, which is representational of the Middle Belt region of Nigeria that includes Plateau, Benue, Taraba and Southern Kaduna States.

She wailed, in narrative prose, rather than poetry, “Haven’t we learnt yet, oh my beloved country? Haven’t we seen enough lands dug by shaking hands in fury and fear? And haven’t we carried enough bodies, stiff and silent, wrapped in the weight of injustice?”

From the conniving government and nonchalant Nigerians outside of the Plateau killing field, she asked, “Haven’t we learnt yet, Nigeria, that silence is a co-conspirator, that when the leaders turn away, history sharpens its knife; that when justice is delayed, the earth grows fat with graves; that a country that does not punish its past will live to repeat it in different dialects?

“Haven’t we learnt that violence does not stay contained, and the machete swung today could rest on any door tomorrow? That today’s victim is yesterday’s neighbour, and tomorrow, it could be you, me, or the child who still believes that home is a safe place, that this is still our Nigeria?”

Another female poet lamented in dreadful words, “The food basket of the nation is now the blood basket of the nation. The land, once lush with green, now hush and grim, filled with sullen faces with no hope to survive the day, like arid ground in want of rain.

“Pain is plain. It’s daybreak. Folks are supposed to go on to their farms, but farms are not the safest places to be. It’s nightfall, it’s heartbreak, it’s heartache, over destroyed homes, destroyed crops, slaughtered brethren and bloodshed.

“Motherland is not the safest place to be. Once lively hoes now echo with silence; the land, loud with violence, flooding with the blood of the young and the old alike. Great sons fall like autumn leaves, dead bodies scattered like mustard seeds…

“They say tough times don’t last. Tell that to the people of Guma, who have watched herdsmen turn gunmen. Tell that to the people of Turan, who have been swept from their homes, like brooms to flies, their homes and belongings transformed to bonfires.

“Tell that to the people of Sankerra. Tell that to the people of Logo. Tell that to the people of Kwande, who have had bullets sprayed on them like rainwater, who have been changed to nothing but chickens for slaughter. Tell that to youths who this has caused them their futures.”

But enough of the poetry; the artists’ impression of the unbridled carnage happening on the Plateau of Nigeria, without anyone in government or the security agencies being able to take any tangible steps to contain it.

One real-life story of the pains caused by these invaders on the Plateau is the ridiculous story of Samuel Ortom, who, as the sitting governor of Benue State, was chased, with his security details, by terrorists from his farm.

A recent report from Benue State claims that several communities, like Tombo Mbaya, Buruku Local Government, and Mbachoughu and Mbanyagber, in Tarka Local Government, came under “coordinated assault” by armed herdsmen.

Governor Caleb Muftwang personally reported how terrorists sacked communities in Plateau State. His words: “These communities that have been recently attacked were part of the communities attacked in 2023… The Ruuri community that was first attacked lost about 17 people in 2023…Over 50 persons were killed within one week in attacks on communities that left over 300 houses burnt.”

Governor Muftwang reasons, “If these attacks have been going on for close to 10 years (most of which is under the All Progressives Congress), it tells you that there is a deliberate, conscious attempt to clean out populations.

“As I am talking to you, there are not less than 64 communities that have been taken over by the bandits on the Plateau, between Bokkos, Barkin Ladi and Riyon Local Governments. They have been taken over, renamed, and people living there (now are) conveniently on lands they pushed people away to occupy.”

Why do government and security agencies fail to repel the land grabbers and restore the rightful owners to their ancestral lands? Gen. Danjuma told a home crowd in Taraba State, “The armed forces are either not capable or unwilling to protect us.”

Following is the, albeit one-sided, report of a current victim hiding in the bushes to avoid another attack from terrorists, that Governor Muftwang, like Lai Mohammed, President Muhammadu Buhari’s Minister of Information, called bandits.

“This is reporting from Hurti, on exactly what happened on 2nd April 2025. We were living peacefully with these Fulani herdsmen… At around 3:45pm… we… just began to hear gunshots… We saw that they had surrounded the environment. They were shooting sporadically, shooting at every person…

“But they concentrated more on the men that they wanted to wipe out the community. They kept on telling us that we say we are serving a living God. Where is our God now? They kept on shooting everybody that they found around….

“After the shooting, the next thing is that they started burning houses… They looted all the foodstuffs, our house stuffs…. On Thursday… we were able to recover 32 corpses… We went searching again, and still retrieved another four…. We had a mass burial for the 32 and the four others were buried in different places.

“17 people sustained injuries, and they are currently receiving treatment. One of them, Oji Tobias, has lost his life. I am pleading that all necessary measures should be taken to make sure that this does not recur…. The government should be able to arrest these people and make sure that justice takes its course.”

To resolve this matter, maybe the government should take Gen. Danjuma’s counsel, wherein he said, “As a soldier, my training teaches me that the best defence is attack,” and enlist citizens of the Plateau in something like South-West Nigeria’s “Amotekun”.
